I need a NAS for my home network, it needs to be a reasonable price, hold atleast 2 drives and a minimum capacity of 2TB, 2x 1TB drives.
Incase of a drive failure i want the data backed up, (Raided?) so really i'll only have 1TB but thats fine aslong as it's safe.

I need to connect to it on Windows XP, and Vista and Linux.
Needs atleast 1 USB port for pen drive / printer
File format: no idea?

That's all :)

Some model's i've been looking at; cannot link because of competitors but you can google.

1. Thecus N2100
2. Netgear SC101T
3. Icy Box IB-NAS4220-B
4. Linksys NAS200-EU
5. HYPERTEC BOX-FSV2SR/E

If theres a product you can recommend please post or the best out of above, they're all around £100.

Thank you!!

I have a QNAP 209 II which is a two drive unit which seams to match your specifications. It seems reasonable in it's transfer speeds too and the new interface with the 3.x firmware is nice.

Note that there are later models of this (219 and 239). The QNAP site has a reasonable amount of information on the models and their is a forum on that site if you have further questions.

One comment I would make with these, and all of the models you have listed; be very careful regarding disk compatibility. Most NASes will have tables of which disks work with which models and if you don't use dsks which are on those then you run the risk of them not auto spinning down, dropping out of RAID, or not being picked up at all.

I have the NAS200 its not great compared to some of the other NAS that are out there now adays.

Slow SATA controller chip and the firmware has not been hacked so you cant run a linux distro on it like some of the others.

I thought the QNAP TS-209 II was a max of 2TB.

my bad - i meant http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-013-QN

but that kind of blows your budget away :(

And this is why you need to look at the actual compatibility tables for the products. According to the compatibility table on the QNAP site that 1.5TB drive is compatible (as is the 2TB drive) with the 209 II as long as you are using the disks as either a mirrored (RAID1) pair or as seperate drives due to the maximum volume size being 2TB.

I would not go for the Icybox or D-link options as they are both supposed to have relatively slow performance.

This site has information on various NAS units and performance graphs for them.
