Help choosing GPU

Well I recently bought a 5870.

The good:

. Very powerful
. Very quiet
. Very cool temps

The bad compared to a 470, which is the only card I would consider (or a 5850, but you havent listed that):

. Expensive
. Drivers are a let down
. No physx (if this bother you at all)

I cannot vouch for the 470, becuase Iv never seen it run before, nor have I owned an Nvidia card since my 7950gx2.

However, so many games are Nvidia branded these days, and by the looks of things the 470, does keep pace more or less with the 5870 in certain areas.

I can say the 5870 is a good card.... but if your slighlty budget conscious, I would consider the 470.

The 470 is only maybe £40 at most more expensive than a 460, so for that reason, I would go with the 470 over the 460.

The 5850, has all the pluses of the 5870, but the performance of the 470, so its up to you.

Supposedly however the 470, runs hot and can be loud. Again cant confirm this.

I would say GTX470...best performance v price ratio (GTX460 is good performace for their price, but like the lesser price they are at, they also comes with lesser performance than a GTX470).

5850s are £30 cheaper than GTX470s...
And GTX460 1GB is about £30 cheaper than 5850. According to AnandTech's data, speed wise at 1920x1200 4xAA the 5850 is about 110% of GTX460 1GB, where as the GTX470 is about 110% of the 5850. So while the price gap is pretty much £30 on both side, the performance increase is actually greater in the gap between the 5850 and GTX470, as it is 10% on top of a 5850 vs 10% on top of GTX460 1GB.

Also, ain't the £195~£200 5850 (XFX/HIS) that currently being sold are non-reference design, so their voltage can not be tweaked no? There's the Asus's 5850, but no sure if you can find it for £195 and delivered.

The point I was making Marine-RX179 is that there is a new 460 on the market now that competes on all levels with a 470. If you had bothered to look at the link I provided you would have seen this.
So is it worth spending more on a 470 when you can buy a 460 that does the same (maybe more?)
Just as i would say is it worth buying a 5870 when you can save £100 and get a 5850 to do the same job.
If you want "bang for your buck" These are the only 2 cards worth considering. If on the other hand you have deep pockets and don't mind spending out large amounts for something that is going to devalue VERY soon Then go for the expensive option (or don't want to OC)
My advice was aimed at Lolcb keeping in mind new cards around the corner and sensible spending at THIS time.

GTX470 now only cost £225, and I don't see that MSI GTX460 1GB HAWK will be much cheaper than it especially with the default clock speed at 780MHz (most likely £200+); but if they do bring it out at £180~£190 price point not £200+, then it would be a great buy. Also, you are comparing a card that MAY overclock to 1GHz (just because the tested HAWK card managed to hit 1GHz, doesn't mean all of them would) vs a card that's at stock speed. Have a look at Nickson's GTX470 overclocked to 850MHz:

GPU score 1200 higher than the 1GHz GTX460 in vantage.

A 5850 could be a consideration, the Xfx 5850 this week only offer is at £195 with two bundled games. Usually the 5850s are around £210 which is too much, but at £195 they are finally at a competitive price point. It depends on how much money you want to spend. If you want great performance for under £200 get a 5850, but if you want to go the extr £30 the GTX470 is probably for you. They are relatively linear as far as price/performance goes

Just a follow up post...

The MSI GTX460 1GB HAWK is now available for pre-order at the amazing (high) price of £223! Surely people will take it over the £225 Asus GTX470 with 3 years warranty!....NOT! :D
