Been reading benchmarks etc for nigh on 5 hours now. I will be gaming 1440p. After looking at benchmarks it seems the top performers are GTX 680 SLI or a single GTX 690 (source: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU13/707

I'm just wondering if I'm missing a trick or if there is a potentially 'better' option that isn't listed. Budget can go up to £500 but not without a good justification. I have done a search on 1440p and read many of the threads just like mine but opinions change daily (as do the cards available it seems)

Many thanks

Sorry, forgot the basics there, still speccing up but will be i5 4670K and probably Asus Z87 Pro. Nothing is set though really apart from the CPU, PSU will be purchased to suit the other choices rather than the other way round.
2560x1440 monitor (single)

I'd suggest getting an i7 and 2x7950's/670's. I'd maybe edge towards the 7950's for the extra vram, wider bus and free games which i would sell to recoup money.

If I had 500 notes right now to spend, I'd go for the 7990 and hope AMD finish what they started with the frame metering stuff.

A lot of interesting suggestions here. I am slightly put off the 7990 by some reviews I've read that generally all agree there are cheaper and faster cards available. ALthoguh they don't say what. One could argue that it offers much better a lot compared to the GTX 690 though.
After looking it seems the 690 is above and beyond what I want to spend anyway.

Seems a pair of 760's could also be a good option. This card is also very good from what I read and may be worth pushing the budget for: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-218-EA&tool=3

AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition CF sees to be hovering about as well but I don't really get what card that is.

Dont read the reviews... They were written when the cards were £800

There is NO card faster than the 7990

+1 there is no single card with better performance than the 7990.

For £499 it is a steal.

To put it in perspective - my 2x7970's which will be marginally (but not noticeably) better than the 7990 (at least will be once I get my new 4770k up and running to get rid of cpu bottleneck), cost £416 and £300 each...

Then add on another £100ish each card for the waterblocks and backplates. Jesus, that is the best part of a grand.

As I said, at the price it is just now the 7990 is an utter steal.

Ok, will there be more coming out? Only seems to be 3 available. MSI more attractive due to longer warranty. I guess I won't really need to fiddle with this card OC'ing wise. I'm well aware my build is overkill for what I need but I like to get at least 3 years use out of them.

Ok, just hope it doesn't sound like a jet but can't have it all :) Just trying to fathom out a few other bits then I'll do my order.

I was informed via email when i asked that the £499 price tag would be going up once the MSI cards are in stock. so you have untill the 30th to place an order for a 7990 or you may end up spending more :/

I meant I'll order my bits now but obviously won't be building until September as the card won't be with me until then.

Unless the bits you want are on sale dont buy now and build later. Everytime I do that I see them for cheaper in the OCUK midweek sale or elsewhere.
