Far Far Away!
Hi all,

Moving into a property in the southeast and the broadband available is FTTP via OpenReach. Preferably i'd like 900mb package. Providers that come up are the usuals but i'm trying to nail it down to one out of these, EE, Plusnet or Zen. Usage case is mainly evening use, streaming on a tv and some gaming, so low pings would be best. And a provdider that deals with congestion well. Zen seem a little more pricey but get what you pay for it seems and reviews online seem good. Any true experience responses would be ideal. I'd also consider changing the router as i see a lot of people online suggest. Price i'd like to pay is about £30 and aware of the price jumps. Zen is £45 for 900mb. I'm new looking into this so thanks for any suggestions.

Am in the southeast
Plusnet 900Mbs I pay £35
Their router is basically a rebadged bt hub
Though I have always used my own
Routers anyway
But its ok for an isp router
really depends how much you want to
mess around in your router settings whether
an isp supplied router suits or not

As a new customer
You could get a better deal
Going through somewhere like topcashback
The offered deals vary month by month
On topcashback
Not looked at current ones for Plusnet

My speed is usually 10--20Mbs over the 900 download speed
And 10Mbs over the upload speed

Cheers, Looks like most packages are 29.99 first year for 900mb via comparison site. 144 cashback if bought through topcashback for plusnet. For me its about low pings really and i think the use of own router is potentially just to have "better" hardware than is provided. Otherwise its probably fine. (I guess)

I have no issues with ping
Though have ethernet all the way
To the pc

Mobile devices I dont really do anything
Where a few milliseconds higher
Ping would matter

Wifi is usually where a lot of people
Are unhappy with isp routers
That's going to depend on individual circumstances
How big a property
Is it a solid brick built property
Is it 3 stories high etc

Its easy enough to try the isp router first
Then make a decision if its not
Fulfilling what you require then get your
Own router

Good shout. Pc would be hooked up via ethernet. Phones/tv on wifi.

Plusnet or Sky over EE and Zen. PN is owned by BT (EE), but you get Sheffield based CS/Faults who are actually competent and professional, congestion shouldn't be a thing with any of the providers being discussed, but if it is, it'll likely affect all as they use the same OR network where it's most likely to be a problem. The only potential downside is the PN billing system was a little quirky, but it usually worked in customers favour. Sky are a generally decent ISP, but they use MAC encapsulation which can limit your options when it comes to 3rd party routers, and the older Sky Hub's weren't the best, Sky is one of the few providers where you can re-contract at any point, which can be a benefit in some cases, CS/TS were UK based last I knew and again generally competent. Whoever you go with TCB/Quidco.
