Hi all. Hoping for some help or C&C with choosing a windows based tablet as there are quite a few.

Should I wait until later in the year for windows 10? - I am not in any rush to buy and will probably be using this more in September when I go on hols during flights.

I have no budget in mind but would rather spend £200 than £1k.

My main use for the tab would be gaming, mainly emulation (using something like the ipega 9023 for controlls) and some PC gaming (older games rather than new titles). I want a windows based tablet over an android for that reason - windows games else I would have ordered a NV Shield because to me that seems like the best of the bunch. I assume they should have no problem emulating N64 and SNES, NEOGEO etc.

Any suggestions, comments from your own experiences etc would be much appreciated as I am left scratching my head.

Hi

and welcome to the forum

you don't really have much choice,

either you buy surface pro 3 or dells new venue 11 pro with the M cpu. Both these are fast machines but cost arm and a leg. If you feel your work load will be light then you could opt for the atom based dell venue 11 pro or even the 8 inch version and there are many Chinese and other brand of atom windows 8 machines.

From my understanding Microsoft will offer windows 10 as a free upgrade( could be wrong though so best to double check)

If by emulation you mean Mame, N64, commodore, dreamcast type emulation then the intel atom type machines will be fine, with the exception of some dreamcast titles but any serious gaming and even much older titles struggle. I could not get Rayman( new pc game not old rayman) to run well on a venue 8 pro with graphics on high and reducing it made it look horrible. Honestly PC TYPE gaming on a tablet in general and specially on intels atoms processors is no go, unless you are willing to accept graphical compromises.

as some examples (these are atom based cpu)

just search for things like venue 8 pro gaming or windows 8 atom gaming hence forth.

I have both intel atom based tablet and i7 tablet, currently in the process of selling the i7 since the atom based does everything I need. I find tablets difficult to be productive on unless its mainly for media type work ie watching moves and surfing and for that atom based stuff is sufficient. If you wanted to try, you could pick up a second hand/refirbished venue 11 pro atom on the bay for cheap and try for yourself.
