hi there guys

at the moment iv got the current set up:

antec 900 case
ASROCK SKT-775 4COREDUAL-VSTA (due to gfx card i had at the time)
e6600 @ 2.4
geil 2 GB pc6400
ati x1950 pro (agp)

iv bought a gfx card EVGA e-Geforce 8800 GTS. i was looking to do an upgrade on the motherboard to a nvidia chipset which preferably be a 680i but dont know which one to get (value for money) . in fact im not even sure if i need the 680i or just go for a 650i . any feedback would be much appreciated.

I have both a 680i board and a 650i board and I would go 650i if you don't need the 6 SATA ports and the second Gb Ethernet port. The 2x 16x PCIe slots are only a problem at over 1600x1200 resolutions and even then you're only talking about a 5-10% drop in overall performance.

I would go with the ASUS 650i board as the Abit is reported to be only half-finished and badly in need of a BIOS revision. The ASUS also needs a BIOS revision, but at least it's stable. The MSI is still too new to be a known quantity.

Also NVidia have recently released 680LT which has the extra SATA ports and the 2x 16x PCIe, but it saves money on a few other areas. Not available yet as far as I know, but coming soon. Also look out for second-hand 680i boards coming onto the market soon as the quad-core overclockers ditch them for revised board that will allow decent quad-core overclocking.

I'm getting a new motherboard soon and I've been looking at the DS3P for a while now. However I'm looking at the 650i as well as it has 2 IDE channels which would be very useful for me as I wouldn't have to get a SATA hdd. I know a lot of people have RMA'd these boards are gone back to older boards because of incompatibilities and poor overclocking.

Can any current 650i owner give me an update on their performance and how the new BIOSs are coping with the teething problems?

I think to avoid confusion you should possibly start a new thread. The general wisdom at the moment is you don't need SLi, don't buy NVidia because they are not as easy to overclock as the P965 boards. This guy needs NVidia/SLi and the discussion here is about 650i or 680i really.

Okay I'll stick with 965P, I wasn't looking for a long debate on it just a couple of peoples experiences. Guess I could do with a new harddrive anyway

God knows why they don't have 2 IDE channels anymore, is it really that hard?
