Hi,

My bro was in the middle of playing some game when my comp just switched off for no apparant reason. Now when I turn my computer on, there is no beep, no video output and my fan starts running at full speed with lots more noise than usual, previously I had it set to some slow speed in the bios. It was fine yesterday and has been for the last 9 months. Any help please??!

I think its the MB because of the fact that my comp fails to do anything at start up, and with the fans at full speed, this would imply that my MB is not doing something quite right. Do you agree?

Spec:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice (Socket 939)
Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT

PS Someone plese reply

It could be the motherboard but it is quite unusual for a motherboard simply to fail. Have you got any other parts you can test it with? Have you tried rebuilding yet?

It could be:

Motherboard
Processor
Powersupply
Overheating

All of those things could be causing those problems. Try and get some components to test the pc with.. If not. Take into a local PC Shop

I've now removed everything but the RAM and the processor and still get no beep. But the fans do get power (as they always have). I then removed the RAM and still no beep. Yes the speaker is plugged in.

Overheating and power arent possible problems in this case... I dont think.

Would it be possible for it to boot without a CPU??? Atleast to the stage at which it goes "no cpu found"???

Did you take the CMOS Battery Out for 10 seconds?
(I'm not trying to make you sound stupid or anything, but any little thing can make these damn PC's work again)

It is starting to sound like Motherboard to me..
What Game was being played?
Was the PC being Overclocked at the time?
How new is the hardware? If it's under warranty just send the stuff back.

Receipts I might be lacking... but the stuff was bought in October 05.

Yeah yeah I've already done the battery thing.

WoW was being played at the time. No it wasnt overclocked, other than I have to have the memory voltage manualy set in the bios but this has always been the case. think it was set to 2.7v

Was the CPU retail boxed? If so it should have a 3 year warranty on it.
If you deal direct with AMD/Manufacturer you don't always need receipts. Just say the date you bought the goods, and where from.
Benq were ok with it when I had to RMA a monitor.

All I can suggest now is try a CPU you know works. But be wary because you don't want to pop it :p

I dont have anything available. But wouldnt you agree that it seems to be the MB?

If it is, I dont think much damage would have been caused since it doesnt seem to try to do anything?

I'm leaning towards motheboard but I always try EVERY Possible thing just in case.
Even petty things like changing IDE cables etc have been known to resolve non booting issues.

sorry if i seem arguementative but i unplugged everything inc. all cables. It was just PSU into the MB which was wired into the speaker and had just the RAM and CPU on it. And still no beep

CPU or Motherboard Then.

I'd say Motherboard more likely..

I'm only suggesting small things because we get customers in all the time with so many varied problems that anything seems to work at times...

Yea. Fair enough. I'm gonna try some combinations of old kit.

But if I was to tell you that since day one the bios would randomly reset (less than once a month) and also less than 2 months ago I updated all MB drivers for the first time inc bios. And now thinking about it, not sure if I got rid of the old ones first. Would this sway you in anyway??

Could be BIOS Corruption or something like that instead of hardware but yeah that would sway me
It is under warranty so contact manufacturer and RMA it.
You dont always need proof of purchase as they send out the same board.
Just inquire and see what happens.

Since it is my power supply (for certain). And my case w/ PSU was bought from OcUK as a present but using mine or my mums ( ) card cant remember which. Antec are asking for proof of purchase which I dont have. So could you guys email me a copy of the invoice. It was Antec Sonta bought in time for Christmas 2004 surname Sharples. Do you need any more details?

Sorry captain stu, none of us here have anything to do with OcUK so you will need to email them directly, Gibbo who posts on the forums sometimes would be a good guy to email, Fatboy is another Don who works for OcUK or send them a webnote and OcUK will probably be able to help. :)
