Hi,

I recently bought some cathode ray lights for my computer (powered by a 4 pin molex connector). I wanted to change the switch on them so they could be repositioned. So I cut the old switch off which temporarily left some bare cable exposed.

Unfortunately while moving I accidentally turned my computer on and one of the exposed cables was resting on the back of my motherboard. I saw some sparks and immediately turned it off.

However now when I try to turn my computer on the fans spin up and lights on the graphics card come on but then about a second later the computer turns off again. Searching online this seems to indicate a short circuit issue.

Is there any way to get my computer working again or is it beyond repair? Ive already tried removing CMOS battery, unplugging and replugging all cables, removing and reinstalling ram sticks, pushing and holding the power button.

Would the motherboard or power supply be broken? Or could all components be fried?:(

Thanks.

Unlikely that the PSU is broken. If it's vaguely decent then it'll have protections against short circuits etc. Sounds less promising for the motherboard. If 12 volts has been applied directly to components on the mobo then it might be dead - stuff on the motherboard generally runs at much lower voltages.

I would take everything out of the case and set it up elsewhere (not on a carpet!) If it still doesn't work, and you've tried reseating all components/resetting CMOS, then you have to assume that something is dead. Try the RAM sticks one at a time. If no good then I would suspect dead motherboard.
