Howdy,

Got a bit of an issue here. Basically, my girlfriend's dad's laptop won't boot up at all. It reboots itself when we select Last Known Good Configuration, it reboots itself when we select Safe Mode and it reboots itself when we try and boot from the Windows XP CD =(.

It started when we tried to install the sptd.sys file (in order to run Daemon Tools). If I could access the recovery console on the Windows CD I could remove the driver, but we can't get into the computer at all. It's acting like it's severely overheated.

Any ideas on what may be causing this? Could it be a co-incidence and there is a hardware issue, or could the sptd.sys file really cause this much of a mess? Never had any issues with the driver on other machines =(.

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

Cheers!

Have you tried getting into the bios and resetting it to defaults?
also you may see the temps there as well.

Download the latest version of Hiren's Boot Cd - Boot it up and load the windows installation on the disk, then remove the problem files from the current installation.

Everyone should have this CD anyhow - totally invaluable to anyone with more than a passing interest in computing.

Cool, got that. What should we be using to remove the file that we don't want? How do we load the Windows Installation on the disk?

Cheers!

Ok, the computer is still shutting off - even when using the CD. This means it can't be anything to do with the driver or hard drive right? It must be a hardware issue?

Use the CD and run Memtest to see if it does anything, I'm guessing not since it should throw an error instead of simply restarting but anything is worth a try.
