im quite new to the concept of overlcoking but i kind of know my way around it, but i entered some settings earlier on and now the computer wont seem to respond at all, its acting very strangely

at first the bios would not post, so i cleared the CMOS by placing a screwdriver on the pins to short it out

i then turned on the PC, it posted and come up with an error message about the CMOS and i had to choose a profile, which i did - i chose "default settings"

however after pressing enter, and trying to reboot wit the settings the computer then does not POST, it will only POST when i clear the CMOS again, it does this for any of the profiles that i chose

any help would be greatly appreciated, is there something im missing, and have i potentially damaged any of the components?

My computer is:

gigabyte GA-MA78GM-SH2
4gb ocz reaper ram @ 800mhz
amd athlon 64x2 3.0ghz
9600GT

the settings that i used last when the problem started were:

HTT @ 800mhz
FSB: 280 mhz
multiplier @ 12
ram: fsb ratio was 4

cpu vcore was 1.4v

any help would be greatly appreciated, im stuck and im not sure what to do now

Doubt OC'ing broke anything.

You Should unplug power before reseting CMOS ideally if your doing it the "Shorting Pins method", sometimes even the battery needs removed to get it fully reset.

thats a good point actually, the power switc was still on when i did it, but i figured that becuase the error message came up id done it successfully, ill power it off completely and short it out and see how it goes, thx

nah still nothing, same problem, i load the default settings and then after it loads then it wont POST unles i clear it again, i havnt a clue whats doing it, the manual says nothing aabout it either

Did you try removing the battery? Remove it and leave it out for a few hours just to make sure.

yeah ive just tried that, left it out for around 8 hours, and i tried it again and the same problem is still present, its as if its no longer saing to the CMOS if that makes sense, i can get into the bios itself and try and change settings but so far i havnt found anything that has helped, will updating the bios have any effect and is it worth a shot?

have you tried loading optimized defaults in the bios?worked for me when my pc could'nt post.

thank you so much, i just tried that and it worked, lol, seems strange to me - i dont understand why the fail safe defaults werent working, but anyway its booted now and i have my computer back =) thank you guys so much for the help

pull the lead out, short the pins, wait a minute or so, plug lead back in, press and hold F11 (should reset back to standard bios settings) go into bios and put the values back, save and exit. Then if you decide to oc, do it in steps :)
