for some strange reason my windows performance has bottommed out. multitasking is terrible and my dvd will only just burn a 1.0x!! if i play a game everything runs 1st class. i dont know why the windows xp has became very sluggish does anyone know what might be causing this

I got this too

CPU is showing a great speed, but Windows etc is hellish slow, and yes, games etc are running well enough?

Nothing to do with Virus / spyware here.

My specs are:-

Gigabyte DS3
E6300
Kingston 2x512MB
Hitachi 80GB + 2x250GB Seagate
NEC 3540 x 2
WinXP64

Drivers all all from the site, but the CD Drivers make no difference, nor does the O/S I try... XP64 seems to be the best so far in that the other are slowed down more than XP64 is.

I had run it fairly ok for a while, but then it dropped even more and I have a sneaky that its one of the updates??

you could have a point there mate, it could be the same problem for me as my system is less than a week up and running and i usually do all the updates

Mine is very similar - keeps stalling and i have to reboot when it freezes up while multi-tasking.

I'm gonna update all drivers and run a full scan - see if it makes a difference.

Not me.

I have used WD200, Seagate 250, Hitachi 80GB, Maxtor 160GB and at this time, I am running a 36GB Raptor, however, there is little real difference between them all.

Do you recon there could be somethign with the SATA on it then?

There are 3 controlers... Well, 2 controlers, one with 2 ports and another with 4.

I dont think there will be any difference in performance, but the purple one seems to be the 2-port one, and the 4 port is the orange ones.

I am using the seond from the top of the orange ports, as this come up as device 0.

I will swap the drive over to start up on the others in a bit to see if there is any true gain, but as of about 3 hours ago, I threw on Win2K and I have gone through the CD installing the drivers one by one and NOTHING else... No GFX, No Audio, No serial/parallel ports of anything, and so far, its runnign as well as can be expected. Next up is the GFX, but Im sure that requires DX9 and DOTNET 2 to go right...So, I will do those one by one too and see if it slows down afterwards... Long labourious process as I am doing a few tasks between each install of whatevers, to see if I can find an actual cause of the slowness?

no definately dma mode getting good benchmarks in hdtach. was just looking at people with similar bits of hardware. im also using gskill memory and a 1950xtx gfx, everything is at stock, notjhing at all has been altered with them. i cant get the gfx driver to update any ati drivers dont recognise the card

Dual core here working like a dream.

Do you have DOTNET installed?

Newer ATI drivers require it annoyingly enough!

Just run Windows updates.

That will find out if you need v1.0 and the 1.x updates, but also v2 too!

Alltogether, they aint too far off about 70MB!!!

OOF!

That, plus the ATI CATs, aint a million miles off 100MB

Oof ( Again )

Oh sod it.

I have just been reinstalling XP again, and going through the BIOS.

I have come across a couple of suspect settings in the BIOS, and I forgot what they are, bu tthere is 4 of them together, and I have disabled them all, and so far, I have it fully up and running with ALL updates, plus, some news that I have never managed before, but I have got a Creative soundCard running in it now too!

Well sweet.

Anyway, I will get back on the settings tomorrow.... Running a few benches for the rest of the night.

Oh, hang on... Ill just fire her up!...

Sodding hell...

I left the drives hanging out... Wait there...

Right... Sorry about that, I just booted into Windows...

Ok, the BIOS

In the ADVANCED PAGE

CPU ENHANCED HALT
CPU THERMAL MONITOR 2 (TM2)
CPU EIST FUNCTION

Are all DISABLED on mine

I am now happy to say that I am running XP64, its got no slowdowns anymore, and I am also running a SBLIVE24 just fine.

I will also say however, that I have my SBLIVE in the middle PCI slot, any other it wont work right, but also I have had toput a PCI card into the bottom slot... I am using a TV CARD that XP64 cant install drivers for ( Dont have any and I dont think they exist either ) but if I take the TV Card out... The SBLIVE stops working??? - Go figure!?!?!?

I dont care anyway, its running sweet as a nut right now.

I dont think those BIOS settings are the cause of it going right now, but they certainly seemed to help?
