Ok, I can do your average CSS/XHTML websites.

I have been asked to do a on-line shop.

Does anyone know a really good off the shelf package to create the shop. I have had a look at OSCommerce, but I heard some horror stories.

Thanks

There is a list that I have looked at;

Actinic
Zencart
OSCommerce
CubeCart

I was just wondering if anyone with experience of these could point me to the best one to use.

From the let somebody else do the hard work way of thinking

OS commerce is good

With a small add-on that I will need to remember the name of all you do is install oscommerce, install the add-on, grab your HTML index document and paste PHP include statements where you wish to have the data, really easy intergration into your site

I'm also currently looking at a project of coding my own, although the tut's I'm using state very clearing that they are not overly safe.. again I can link if you wish

Does your client have an IMA and PSP they would like to use?
.

Gordy Gord, what is IMA and PSP please, no doubt I will look a fool when you state what they are :D

I recommend presta shop here, esp as its free.

Have been having a look at it (E.g. seeing how it works) and it's quite impressive imo - as literally everything is OO'd.

Stear clear of osCommerce and derrivatives - horrible convoluted code and a long track history of security problems. Why not sub-contract the e-commerce part to another company that specialises in this kind of service? Either that, or use Shopify which is very easy to setup and get your designs on.

They cross over slightly. Vendors sometimes supply both, such as WorldPay who will give you an IMA and PSP.

IMA = Internet Merchant Account. A lot of banks will provide IMA facilities now and these are sometimes referred to as acquiring banks. Its basically where the cash ends up.

PSP = Payment Service Provider. Your bank may provide these facilities too. These things are PayPal, ProtX and they deal with the money, off or on your site. They authorise the transactions and pass the money onto your account.

Oh and I hate the impression osCommerce gives. I dont understand why it is so popular, but there appear to be much better alternatives out there.

as that's very expensive and not a;ways an option for smaller stores.

A friend has spent months working on a site in Actinic cat and its awful, he has so many problems with it and Actinic support is good but they cannot fix the issues he is having, they keep making fixes and it keeps going wrong, very poor product it seems.
