please help, I have an external USB HDD which I use to store stuff to carry around with me. I have a lot of install XP programs on there which I'm not too bothered about, but I also have a lot of personal stuff on there that I'm just not sure I could live without (season 6 24 for a start ;)).

The drive is partioned in two (2x20Gb) and windows came up saying that F: was corrupt, run CHKDSK, so i did and it came up saying removing orphan files or something. Now I look on F: and all the stuff has gone, well not viewable here anyway.

Is there a way, free ideally, to get it back or something from fragments?

Never trust data on a USB enclosure, I've had data loss, even though disconnected properly. Stuff just disspeared. Something to do with the chipset.

Sorry can't help with retreival.

Well what can I say - I think I <3 Micro$oft.

I did Start>Run>chkdsk F: /r

/r is the recovery switch, and fingers crossed it seems to be working!

EDIT!
WORKED :D

backup = having more than one copy, so you shouldn't be bothered if one gets corrupted, just copy over again
