As per title, I'm looking at building a new pc in the new year and would appreciate some advice.
I've specced up a 7800x3d system but I'm wondering if that might be overkill and it's just over 2 grand. I also know I could save a lot of money building with a 5700x3d.
I'm also aware the 9800x3d had today just been made available.

Coming from a 10 year old 4790k with a 2070s, I mostly play destiny 2 and at 3440x1440 on low/medium settings I'm getting consistent 100+fps on 120hz monitor.
Anything will be an upgrade from what I currently use but what matters most to me is getting max longevity from my next system, as that was the mindset I had when I built my last one and it has done me proud - and I'd like to be able to crank settings to max to enjoy my favourite games even more.

I'd really value any feedback/advice from those who have experience with both the 5700x3d and 7800x3d at 3440x1440p to help me decide which one I should go for.
Also worth noting, I do understand the difference in architecture between the 2 (ddr4/5) but I have no personal experience to compare the performance in real terms.
Thank you.

The 5700X3D is fine, but I wouldn't buy into AM4 just because there's no upgrade path. If you wanted to save money, then instead I'd go for the 7600, 7700 or 9700X. The 7700 (import) or 9700X would be my pick right now, based on the prices @ OCUK, but hopefully with the 9800X3D being in demand there might be some upcoming deals on the 7800X3D that push it closer to the £300 it was awhile back.

Building a new rig? Go AM5, you have an upgrade path in the future unlike AM4 so that's really the answer for you as you explicitly want longevity.
Certain games won't have a huge difference at that res, others will, mins will probably be higher on AM5 across the board and for the relatively small difference in price (not that you should be comparing the 5700X3D to a 7800X3D) IMO it's worth it.

Thank you for your advice - that was also my worry with am4.
It will be in the new year when I will be in a position to start buying so hoping prices will fall a little by then, hence originally planning on the 7800x3d.

Excellent thank you.

We're not certain what is going to happen, since AMD might just discontinue the 7800X3D in favour of the 9800X3D, but I'd hope that most of the buying frenzy for the 9800X3D will be done by then and if the 7800X3D is unavailable maybe you'll pick up a great deal on a 7700/9700X or something like that.
