Right, a friend of mine who I play l4d with is constantly crashing mid game, annoying for both of us. I've tried several things to diagnose but have come back with nothing.

I'm hoping one of you guys can see the issue or at least suggest something new for me to try.

The crash:

Similar symptoms to crashes in other source games.
Unable to move player.
Sound loop of last few seconds.
Hard reset required.
No artifacting.
No error report (once it showed one about sound drivers)
No BSOD.
Doesn't happen in survival, just campaign and VS.
Usually happpens within minutes of play starting.
Apparently happens quite a bit when switching weapons.
When he crashes it looks as if he is still in game and AFK until we kick him.

Spec:

q6600 - stock
8800gt - stock
P5Q mopo
250 GB WD HDD
Vista home premium x86
4gb 800mhx crucial - stock
500w PSU - can't recall the make but it's a decent enough brand, possibly OCZ.

Things i've looked at:

All drivers are current.
DirectX is current.
CPU hits mid 60's during Intel burn test.
GPU reaches mid 90's during furmark and 80's during game - hot but not too hot.
Passes memtest.
Tried verifying files.
Reinstalling the game.
Running single thread via console, cfg file and in game option.
Other online games are fine.
No other crashes in about 6 months of having the PC.
Older drivers have the same issue.
Played the game with "-nosound".
Played with no sound drivers.

I have literally no idea what to try next, I'll be going to his at the weekend to have a look first hand. So far all testing has been done via remote access.

Until then, any ideas?

had such problems myself, fixed it by reinstalling windows ;9

After I reinstalled Windows I patched to some newer cat drivers (9.2) and since then haven't had a single in game crash of L4D where I used to get a crash 50% of the time

Managed to play a complete campaign of death toll last night with no issue. He went to play today and crashed before leaving the safe room.

Anymore ideas?

99% of game crashes are recoverable..

my L4D used to crash every now and again

to overcome it

press Winkey + L, (this locks the pc), enter your password, then click on the current L4D game, sould just resume as it was...

if it doesn't then do that again and end the task through Task Manager (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC)
