help diagnosing laptop problem

My laptop has recently developed a fault (it's a Toshiba C660d).
I was working on it yesterday when it totally cut out, even though there was no low battery warning.
I tried turning it back on but it appeared dead, plugged it into the charger and still dead, not even battery or charge light.
I disconnected all power sources, held the power down for 5 minutes, put the charge cable back in but still nothing.
I left it unplugged from the battery and charger overnight and tested it in the morning and it worked, for about 5 minutes before cutting off abruptly again. I was able to restart it several times before it cut out completely again and I had to wait another several hours before it would show any sign of life.
When it dies not even the battery or charge light come on.
When it does temporarily boot, I get 3-5 minutes tops before it dies.
Fans can be heard at startup but I managed to run core temp on it which was producing a Temp of around 60 degrees.

I'm at a loss as to what this could be, I'm taking the power brick into work today to test its output.

Any other help or ideas as to what this problem could be will be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

It's has worked without the battery fitted though, just using the charge cable. Surely if this was the case it would not have worked even temporarily?
