Murphy, our 2 year old daschund cross is barking everytime he hears a pop of a firework in the surrounding neighbourhood, any ideas what I can do to calm him down?

Doing my head in and neighbours must be going nuts too! :/

Put the telly up a bit louder, if you have a good relationship with your parents it might be worth you popping round and explaining why you have the telly up louder than usual.
Or put some music on so it drowns out the banging.

The noise of fireworks going off used to send my two german pointers crazy, they were both trained gundogs, and when they heard fireworks banging they must have thought someone was shooting and there'd be something for them to retrieve.

Both my cats have already left a nice load on the carpet for me :) The jokes on them though because while cleaning it up i noticed one has worms, so ill be forcing some nice worming tablets down their throats tomorrow :)

My mates dog used to be scared of them so it would just hide somewhere all night when we were kids, used to be good fun trying to find the dog. it could get where water couldn't !!

Tried like getting ... doggy ear muffs ?

I read somewhere that if you don't fuss over them at all and pretend nothing is happening they don't get as scared. But if it's older now it's probably too late as it'll already be scared of them. My neighbours dog was like that, terrified of any loud noises poor thing!

Act like nothing is going on.

As soon as you start fussing the dogs get more distressed. Mine puffs and pants and runs around the house none stop, but if i just sit and watch tv like nothing is different she settles a lot

My black lab Charlie is 9 months old now, have just got back from walking him and he didn't flinch. He seems totally cool about the whole thing, is even watching them out of the window right now. Guess I'm lucky as I know that bonfire night can be very distressing for dogs and animals in general.

Not that you will be able to get it now but for future reference there is something that works like a glade plug in which gives off some sort of scent that is very calming for dogs. Should be able to get it from your vet. Name of it escapes me sorry.

If you haven't already close the curtains, put the dog as far into the house (and as far away from the fireworks) as possible, try putting the radio or tv up to muffle the noise somewhat.

If you've got a car then you could always try driving to the middle of nowhere and taking the dog for a walk, that usually works quite well, it means you spend most of the evening out in the cold but it is better than the distress caused to the dog.

I've given our dog some Valarium & Sculcap tablets & something to chew on. He doesn't seem too bothered though.

But I have no idea where the cats are. :/
