Hi all,

I am new to the forums, but am in the process of building a PC. I have built a fair few in my time and until today have been lucky enough to have had no issues. However today, I have just put everything together and I get nothing. Not even any screen output at all. The motherboard post code output is simply 2 dashes "- -" which is not even a valid option in the manual for a code.

I do not have a clue what is going on. Is this a faulty mobo? I have tried taking out graphic card, ram, cpu individually to see if either of those was the cause of the problem but still nothing. Not even a no ram/cpu etc error when they are removed.

Any help will be most appreciated - ive spent the whole day trying to fix this as I am totally lost.

My hardware setup is as follows:

what does your led display read ?

if its - - then its a short on the motherboard

have you put the correct standoffs on

check its not touching anything on the back, no washers floating around etc

oh and shame about that hyper....... ;)

Hi and welcome :)

Also ensure your heatsink isn't tightened too tight if it has a backplate.

If there is a short then that is often the cause.

680i boards have to have a modded back plate, i found this out the hard way

i modded my back plate to clear the resistors as that was the short

if your using a thermalright cooler and plate then ditch it untill you get or moddify your own backplate

The cooler is the standard one that comes with the quad core. Yes i know its a bit crap but I have not had a chance to order the one i wanted yet, but it should do the job as i am not overclocking it at this stage as I cant even get it to turn on!

I shall remove the mobo and try it out of the case.

I didnt add any backplate....

All fans work, lights come on etc I dont think its a power issue. I am not running 2 gpu's just the 1.

I shall post again when I have tried it out the case. Need to find some more thermal compound as I have removed the processor argh!

no its not. hyper is not good but it would run on that psu

what psu would you recommend for this system that will serve it well when i do have some spare cash to buy the 2nd gpu etc etc. I was going to buy a new one but i had this one lying about and thought i could re use it at least initially.

Which version of the Hiper?

They're solid PSU's but the R's have a habit of going bang.

i love my ocz game xtreme 700w had it for a year faultless, ocuk put them in a lot of there own prebuilt systems and ive not seen a faliure yet

enermax also very good

corsair have a good rep although i did see a spate of faliures recently

I have 580W Hiper Modular - part number is: HPU-4B580-MK V2, SLI ready. Swapped it with my scanner from a friend so i thought i would put it to use :)

my evga 680i did this no shorting sent it off for an RMA (not to ocuk) but an though reatil based in bolton lol there blaming me saying thats there was sroching , said it as near some chip by the ram slots , got the boad back and and nothing of the sort ! they seemed to scorch out a resitor near the pci slots the litte **** doing me over like this EVGA by who i told about this evey step of the way (showed them emails told them where this sorching turned out to be etc) and there happy to replace it for me

Update: Have RMA'ed to overclockers for a replacement after trying a bench test and still giving me the double dash of doom! But now there is a darn postal strike! ARGH!!! Darn Royal Mail people!
