Why buy an 06 car to get power he doesn't want when he could have an 09 or even 10 plate car with the power he DOES want?

Definately higher after testing out a few cars today - I don't think I will be buying before I go on holiday on Thursday but will keep you guys posted
carvegio, could you elaborate on your requirements and be a little more specific with the type of driver you are? This could really help us offer advice on a new car for you.

To be fair some people (myself included) set about big purchases such as cars and houses with wide budgets at least initially and that doesn't mean there isn't a serious intention of purchasing. I quoted £8-12k for my wife's car for example. If you think about it, often when non-enthusiasts post threads in here, a lot of the time people end up saying "don't spend that much with your requirements, get xyz for cheaper and put the rest towards a house / hookers and coke" anyway - which is essentially flexing their budget downwards (in other words, had he said "my budget is £14-15k" people would have suggested £10k options anyway most likely!). The easy solution would be to just post requirements but then people will always ask for a budget anyway...
Quick update - I bought a car through BMW AUC.
It was a 320i 59 plate - 32k mileage. It was in budget and looked/drove fairly well. Faster than my old car and the economy is reasonable - picking it up soon.
I tried out a few faster BMWs (330i etc) which were higher than my original budget but they felt like a bit of a compromise of trying to do what I wanted from thread #1 and this one #2 - without achieving either!
I think my choice was more sensible but possibly a bit boring / lacking in overall performance i.e. maybe getting a bmw without true bmw performance.
There is a lot of good advice on the forum - which made interesting reading - so a thanks for the implicit advice! I think my next car thread (may come relatively soon...) will also be a bit surprising again after having driven a few sportier cars.
