My dad is planning to work from a Boat he owns and needs a laptop he car charge off a 12volt car-style charger.. So im looking to find a new laptop for him..

Needs to be:
  • Fairly Compact / Lightweight
  • Has a 12V charger option
  • Good battery life between chargers.

Dosnt need to be:
  • Hugely powerfull i3 max..
  • Anything fancy

Budget might help narrow one down, but a 17"er is not going to be compact or lightweight. All laptops are 19-20v so you would just need a 12 to 19v adapter.

Well id say about £600 is a good figure go on for now..

I appreciate that 17" laptops are generally pretty big, but consider that my dads old centrino DELL Inspiron weighed a small ton and was about 1.5" thick anything modern is thiner..

My point being to emphasise on the weight / compact design than the internal workings.. he only does a bit of basic CAD work, Word and Office apps...

Intel® Core™ i3-2330M Dual Core Processor, 17.3" HD Screen, Windows 7 Home Premium Edition, 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, DVD Rewriter, Dedicated Graphics Ati 6650,

£549

or £619 for the i5 version.

Nothing else better for the money imo. A Dell XPS L702 may come up better for games but reliability and build quality is won by the Lenovo ten times over.

Looks like just the thing for me.. 2.9kgs which isnt tooo bad.. bit lighter than the 17" MBP's currently on the market. So i doubt ill find much lighter.. Plus they i have found it for £450 with 4GB ram..

Make sure it has the dedicated graphics though, the cheaper ones don't,unless you don't need it of course.
