Hi all,

I want to get a new CPU cooler and CPU already running fairly hot (constant 54C on full load). Not worried about it, as normal speeds that temp is fine, but planning on maybe doing some overclocking and obviously need to get a lower tempt to start thinking about overclocking.

I have a AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1090T Black Edition, on a ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3ATX - AMD 890GX motherboard in a Thermaltake VK60001W2Z Element S Case.

Just looking for some suggestions on mid-range and on top-range CPU coolers that will work and fit. Found a few threads of the actual overclocking bit; it’s choosing a cooler that will work well that I need help with.

Thanks in advance, if anything I've forgotten to post just ask!

Thank you,

Out of those the Gelid is the best, the Hiper212 needs 160mm of height to the side panel of your case too.

He posted his case in his first post stulid :p

Thermaltake VK60001W2Z Element S

The ones, which I would recommend if you are going to be doing heavy overclocks and want to have very low temps would be as follows:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-026-CM

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-005-PL&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-011-NC

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-010-NC&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395

And any of the corsair water cooling kits.

And a slightly cheaper alternative:

I have no idea if those will fit in your case or not now.

At the end of the day it comes down to what you want:

- price
- cooling
- noise
- size
- and looks if that is important to you

I've got the VK60001W2Z (has a side fan), so "It is suggested that the height of CPU cooler should not be longer than 162 mm".

I like the look of the NH-D14, but it's more expensive, plus I need to measure up inside my case to see if it'll fit, since it looks like it'll be tight!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, happy to hear any more thoughts,

Thanks again. Since I'm going to be spending double what I was originally planning it's going to be awhile before I buy the cooler, probably a month until after I've moved into new flat and checked I still have any money left :-p.

Since I'll be splashing out on an expensive cooler, what's the best thermal compound to use? Is the compound that comes with it good enough?

From memory most of the times I’ve seen Arctic silver talked about a lot ( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=AC-000-AC ) or if I’m already spending more should i go for a more expensive compound (i.e. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TH-001-ID )

Thanks for all the help so far,

I recently got the Noctua NH-D14 and well... WOW!

The thing is indeed an absolute beast and I would recommend it to anyone with a hexcore... im running the x6 1100T @ stock 3.3ghz and getting 28° idle and 45 full load°

Ok, so necro'ing this thread again to ask on opinions if I should get the NH-D14 or Thermalright Silver Arrow ( https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-078-TR ) which I've seen in a couple of other threads. Both are the same height as far as I can find out!

Thanks (again!),

Silver Arrow would be better. It's quieter and cheaper but on par performance wise with the Noctua. The only problem is waiting for stock.

Saying that, there might be something better than both of those coolers very soon... ;)
