Hey guys and gals, I'm relatively inexperienced with PC components and I was hoping that someone can take a look at my build (below) and recommend a good CPU upgrade that won't require a new mobo. Is it worth getting a Quad-Core with my system? Thanks in advance people!

Rampage Formula mobo (uses socket 775)
Intel duel core 6600 @ 2.40GHz
3.25 GB of RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTX 260

Whats your price range ?

everyone is fapping over the 15 2500 these days, so its a possibility for you, theyre around £170

Bit tricky there mate, you're using components that are 4+ years old... No new CPUs will fit that board.

You could look for a second hand quad core to go in it, might manage a 3-3.2GHz overclock... But nothing super fast.

The obvious question is: what are you hoping to do with this rig after upgrading it?

but do you think I will notice much of a difference?

I'm not familiar with the requirements of Skyrim... but quite often the answer is that a CPU isn't the right bit of hardware to upgrade for a game. I'd get some benchmarks of it before you splash the cash, you might find you'd be better with a new graphics card instead.

Not sure if these are officail or not

Get a good Q6600 that will see 3.6/3.8 and you will be good for some time.

A good chip (low vid) will set you back £70ish and an average one 50-60 :)
