Hi all

I have recently offerred to provide IT support to a local charity that helps children with disabilities.

The charity have recently taken over some premises and have installed some PC's for the kids use.

They have been gifted some Dell precision 330's running XP, unfortunately the PC's only have 128mb of ram which means that cant run video from Itunes or play many games.

I thought that a RAM upgrade would be a quick and cheap process but the machines use PC600 ECC ram, which is proving hard to obtain at a reasonable price.

Do any of you kind people know a source of a budget supply please?

The 330 uses Rambus Ram or Rimms. They are pretty rare now, expensive and an absolute pain in the rear to get working. IIRC you need 4 identical RIMMS, identical in every way ie manufacturer, speed, size. Even then the stars and moon need to align correctly to get them working! I don't think an upgrade is feasible unless you can find a kind soul to donate the extra memory as well.

Clav - thanks for the response.

Given what you say may have to look at some other options - could always pull the ram from 2 and double the ram in another 2?

This might be possible. According to the system manual 128MB was installed as 2x64Mb and 2xCrimms (a crimm is just like a blank rimm that allowed the other slots to work). So you should be able to take out the 2 crimms and fit 2 rimms from another PC.

What's the name of the charity?

ask them if they've applied to these people for cash:

http://www.theactfoundation.co.uk/

They offer financial support for charities and they prefer giving cash for equipment (eg new computers).

edit. I deleted the other one as they don't like kids, miserable lot

Chicken #16 - thank you for the link, but we are in the North East.

Interestingly Peeltrust do not make dontations to childrens charities:

Prospective applicants should be aware that the Trust Deed specifically prohibits the Trustees from making grants to charities primarily devoted to children and those under the control of central or local government. All applications received from Charities which fall into these categories will be rejected without further consideration.
