Hello!

Have a new software developer starting with us soon so looking to buy a new PC.

Requirements
CPU heavy (CPU > anything else)
SSD, faster better!
Graphics card with 3 outputs
Min 16GB ram
Budget ~£1-1.5k

Does this fit the bill OK?

Am comfortable building myself but would rather not, happy to pay more just to get it built for me.

Thanks for your help! Would be doing the same as me:

- Visual Studio
- SQL Server

That's 99% of it. Frequently building an ever increasingly larger ASP.net project (CPU speed very important to keep this down). My dev environment I use ~10GB RAM so 16GB is fine.

spectre/meltdown gimped intel performance and quite a lot i might add.
(although that being said, I'm not to sure if there's been patches since, that may have improved the performance)

Have to admit Visual Studio and MSSQL absolutely fly along on my own TR system, but I don't have an Intel box at home to compare them against. Though have an i7 in my system at work that seems to struggle with them (its only an i7-4710MQ with 16GB so kinda of an unfair comparison)

Reading around Spectre/Meltdown impact it seems to largely depend on exactly which features your using of MSSQL - though I suspect these impacts might be noticeable on a huge heavily loaded production server, and probably not on a developers local instance.

I suspect the spec I posted above would absolutely demolish any intel system for a dev box, as you could be running a boat load of VM's instances, tests and builds etc that would all benefit from increased thread-count, and the TR 1900X @ 4GHz is no slouch, but as soon as someone mentions the need for single thread perf I kind of just default to pointing at the blue team (which i find much less interesting tbh!) :)

Wait till ryzen + , see how 2700/2700x performs with higher speed ram and 4.3gjz +

Reviewers will have their boards TODAY! So should have longer to review then last time around ! Release 19th 2pm . Will give you a guage. Since it's the 13th today, and mention the above... I think :D

Thanks for all the comments! Think will go for the TR build :) Wasn't keen to order last year or two as wanted to see AMD bake into the market a bit more before committing but feel quite comfortable with them now.

Good stuff :)

If your not comfortable building yourself I think OcUK can do it for you for quite a reasonable fee

And one other thing - if only going for 16GB of RAM use 4 x 4GB sticks rather than just 2 larger modules to get the full benefit of the quad channel memory
