Help for newbie with laptop

Need some help folks.

Just bought a new Asus A7J laptop and i wanted to update windows and the rest of the programs.

I've unplug the rj45 cable from my pc and plug it in the laptop then restarted.

All i get is "limited or no connectivity" after that. Do i need to restart my NTL modem then plug it in the laptop?

Yes you do. Whenever you plug a cable modem into a different device you'll need to power it off and then power it back on again.
