Help getting 7.1 speakers playing through all speakers direct!

I have Creative 7.1 speakers with RealTek HD Audio drivers. Currently the Side Right and Side Left speakers do not work. They only seem to work when I apply effects such as 'hall' or 'underwater'. If I tick 'No Effect' then they both don't work.

I'm sick of 7.1 surround sound and I'd just like to play my sound through all of the speakers at once.

I've wasted about 2 hours doing this now. Any ideas? I just want DIRECT sound from 7.1 speakers.

Music, video, anything.

On my old build on XP with C-Media sound drivers i was able to make my speakers play sounds through all 7 of them. I am now on Vista using RealTek and can't seem to get direct sound

There's very little, if any, real content in 7.1, Dolby Digital Ex is about as close as you get which is 6.1 but even then the rear centre is a 'virtual' channel derived from the rear left and rear right.

The content encoded on films etc is only 5.1 discrete channels, the rest is done via upmix and normal music, well thats 2.0.

I'd like to have the sound playing through all my speakers simultaneously, I don't need or want surround sound.

I was able to do this on my old PC using a direct sound option that was available in C-Media drivers.

I believe there are a few hd media discs with 7.1 - and the only way to get that through hdmi is with the new ati graphics cards I understand
