Well as the title says, i have an old 5.1 system, by old i mean a good 5 years, made by the company with initials "CA", at the moment when plugged into my karajan on-board card only one of the speakers and the sub work, get when watching a film through the tv all the speakers work 
Could this be because when it is in the computer it plugs in using one single optical cable (the same fitting as you get on bog standard headphones) whilst when on the tv it uses the red and white cables from a scart lead which plug into an adapter?
I have also tried all the setting in windows relating to sound and everything. Im pretty clueless on how to get it working when playing games however.
I have ordered an xfi which might get them working: I know the speakers don't do it justice but im going to change them to aego m's when i ahve some cash lying around.
