HELP! Have a problem...

Bsically my dad went to turn on his Sont Vaio PCG-9S2M today and everything was fine in DOS etc... until WinXP loaded and everything was so dark, with a bright light you coudl make the screen out in the background but its was so dark like the back light had gone.

I was just wondering, is it the graphics controller thats gone pap or the screen? or the backlight bulb?

Would be grateful for a quick response, thanks.

it could be the inverter or the lcd, the bulb is part of the lcd. if its fine in dos whats it like in safe mode?

according to a forum the Sony PCG-9S2M is the same as the Sony PCG-K315S and i have found this inverter here that looks exactly the same and works on the K315S:

for £20 id go for it myself..

so i got a new inverter, and plugged it in and its still the same any ideas next?

Its fine in dos, then when it goes to loads windows with the bar it goes dull

That implies software, not hardware.

Isn't there a button on Sony laptops that controls brightness? Also, some Sony app that runs in Windows, perhaps?

When i put in my Windows Disc the colour was all there

But when i load into XP the screen doesnt.

Even in safemode

And when the windows XP loading bar is there before it starts up it goes dark from there.

It'll be the brightness, surely.

Try key combos.... try uninstalling any sony software etc.

Cant see anything its sooooo dark lol.

sounds like the tube in the lcd , sometimes they last 20 seconds or so they turn off. what happens if you enter bios does it stay on for more than a few minutes

yeh, its on in the bios forever. It just goes dull when the Windows XP loading bar appears.

if you can get hold of a Live Linux distro that runs off a CD, then you could boot into that, and see if the screen goes dark?

So i downloaded and loaded up, its fine until it goes to load into UBUNTU after the loading screen and the lights go off and the screen just turns off. You cant actually see the background.

Any ideas?

Hi matey have you checked the cover latch button? could be stuck causing the backlight to stay off.

Erm, well in Linux mate, the monitor just goes off. Whereas in XP it goes dim.

I can see the backlight on in .dos etc and in bios but when it loads into windows the light goes off.

???? any ideas???
