hi everyone, thanks in advance for all help!

i have the following as part of my rig;

coolermaster elite 330 case
sata hdd
multi-drive
asus m2a-vm mobo
8600gt
keyboard
mouse
speakers
mic
monitor

so i have most of the stuff there already, now im wanting to purchase the phenom II 955 black edition quad, and i need some help finding the correct;

cooling (cpu)
psu
memory

hope you can give some suggestions, thanks.

Hi :)

All of this depends on how much you have to spend really?

I would go with something like

Corsair PSU - 650W
OCZ Corsair or Patriot memory (Dependant on budget again)
Cooling, If you dont have the budget look at something like a CoolIT Domino ALC, nice simple watercool unit and overclock your chip, if you do have the budget get something like a nice Swiftech H20 Single CPU Loop :)

With Liquid you will get some nice overclocks

hi, thanks a lot for the help.

i am not interested in overclocking, i just came here because im purchasing the hardware from ocuk so thought i could get some re-sale help.

i will just need a good cpu cooler, and im wanting to spend around £200 on

cpu cooler, ram, psu

ive taken a liking to the coolermaster 700w psu
no idea about ram
best cpu cooler for amd phenom?

not sure if you have noticed yet or not but my m2a-vm mobo is and am2/+ mobo which does work for the phenom as its am2/3 compatible.

thx.

AM2+ socket is pin compatible with AM3 CPUs, some need BIOS updates, best to check the mobos web site to see what CPUs are said to work for it. You still have the option of AM2+ Phenom IIs though, which AFAIK are the same as the AM3 CPUs but without the DDR3 memory controller. You don't need DDR3 memroy though, as your mobo ain't built for it.

I'm a big fan of the Noctua cooler, it's a monster of a thing but beautifully made and very quiet to boot.

I've had no problem with OCZ Gold PC8500+ RAM - have a total of 16gb in my two rigs.

As for PSUs, well, I'm runnign an Antec Basics 550w modular HDD and I'm running:
4850 XFX 512mb
Q6600
8Gb RAM
1x Sata HDD [Spinpoint F1]
1x Sata Optical DVDRW
Asus P5Q

And it's not so much as hiccupped with that load. The other machine is an Asus T3 barebone [AM2+] with Phenom II 920, 8Gb RAM, 2.5" laptop HDD and it's running on a 300W PSU that came with the barebone chassis, so 700w is overkill unless you plan to throw a GTX295 in there IMHO.

I think anything decent over 400W would be OK. As I say, thon Antec modular one I have in the Q6600 box is fine for me, nary a glitch nor a glimmer from it, it just works, it's pretty quiet too.

Just my two-penneth ; if anyone wants to correct any points I have made, feel free, but be polite, I've got a dose of flu and the criticism muight make me cry today :( ;)

edit: sorry just updating the post

memory: 4x 240 Pin DDR2, Dual Channel DDR533/667/800, up to 8 GB - this is what my mobo support and i want the best memory for this build and want 3gb for now, any ideas?

RAM is cheap, go for 4Gb.

OCZ Gold and Corsair XMS/Dominator seem popular on here. I like the Gold myself, it's very pretty :)

Don't worry if you don't have a 64bit OS, it just means when yuo get around to getting a 64bit OS you'll have the 4gb available. A 32bit OS will work with 4Gb of RAM, it just won't address it all, which is nothing to worry about.

I have four of these across my two boxes:

Seems good to me.

thanks a lot mate for that, i dont support 1200mhz on my board so i was looking at this, and i think this is the best i can get for my mobo

REMOVED - tell me what you think

had to add a - in the link, sorry if this is not allowed, ill remove if it isnt.

im concerned about a good psu for around £50 that can handle this build, i know psu is a primary factor so any suggestions on wattage and make?

this ok?

thx

That RAM that you had URL FAIL on [mods, be nice, he didn't put the right address anyway...] is the OCZ PC6400 Titanium, which is in the OCUK store here:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-144-OC

I see nothing wrong with that RAM - it has tighter timings than the Gold, but I wanted the Gold because, as I noted earlier, it looks prettier ;)

Definitely not because I assumed that the gold was the best stuff and it would look nice. Ahem. That'll teach me for not checking properly. Not that it's caused any problems for me!

Seems fine though, although I should add that OCUK use DPD as a carrier and they tend to be snappy with deliveries; I have used OCUK for pretty much every piece of kit I have bought this year, delivery has always been spot on providing it's in stock and it gets on the truck before closing time.

My experience of 'that place you tried to link to' is not so hot - I can't remember who they used at the time for delivery, but I it took five days to get four HDDs delivered from them, when the items were in stock and ordered in the morning with 'next day delivery'...and this is completely aside from that e-tailers reputation on returns, which is utterly ******* legendary for being atrociously bad.

Also, OCUKs sales and tech people are nice. They smell of peaches, allegedly.

[can I have four free 1.5Tb Spinpoints for being nice, OCUK staffers? Cheers]

thanks ive edited the link and ill purchase from ocuk :)

what about a £50 range psu now to run a phenom and 8600gt?

thats my last stumbling point.

thanks for the help, ive been looking around and saw a 750W ORYXX "ULTRA" for £45inc delivery, what do you think? its qot 120mm and 80mm fans on it, 2 12v rails, sleeved cables.

but do i need so much wattage for a phenom II x4 955 and 8600gt? corsair says a 500 will do, but for this price i should brab it.

Not heard of that make psu before,my recommendation is go for a name.I have got corsair and enermax and a antec.a lot of people go for be quiet or ocz.
Best to wait for a more informed opinion than mine before parting with the wonga though :)

One with a single 120mm fan will be quieter than one with a 120+80mm.

Also, cheap PSUs are a very bad idea - they tend to be shoddy under load - get a quality one, like andarial suggests - there's a good reason [beyond profiteering] for the Corsair/enermax/etc PSus being pricier per wattage than the no-name ones. Quality costs. And the PSU is the one part of the PSU that has the capability to kill every other component in your PC.

As I say, my Antec one has been sweet and quiet - if in doubt, I'd go with that, it's a good wee unit IMHO.
