Today I got a Draytek Vigor 120 ADSL Modem (just a modem, its not a router). Im going to be connecting it to a router later.

Ive got Sky Broadband.

But, Ive been trying to rig up the modem to the PC to access the internet without a router for now. The Vigor has a single ethernet connection to the PC.

Ive connected all the cables up, it powers on, all LEDs come on. 'It says' its found the DSL connection with the green LED on solid, not blinking.

I log into the modem through internet browser and under status, its shows as being connected by PPPoA to the ISP.

But, when I try and go on the internet....nothing.

The instructions say it should work straight out the box with most UK providers. I does mention in the instructions about logging onto your ISP with your username and password ???

Up until now Ive been using the router issued by Sky (a Sagem F@ST 2504) and I've never had to put any user name or password to get onto the internet. Do I need to now with this new modem? Is the username and password built into the Sky router they supplied?

The sky modems have the username/password, well, built in so to speak. You'll have to extract those, there are guides on google.

Then you'll have to setup Windows to connect using that username/pw.

I think :) It's been ages since I used a non Sky router/modem.

The default username for the Sky router is : admin
And password is : sky

That's the username/password to get into the web interface :) the OP needs the username/pw for his internet connection extracting from the router firmware.

Sky don't support third party routers/modems on their network and as such generally will not give you your username/password, you have to extract it from the router itself.

Yeah this is to log into the routers web interface, not to log onto your broadband service. (just did a google search about extracting your sky username and password, hooray!)

Now I understand! Thanks for replies guys, sneeky Sky. Just need to extract it now and set it up in Windows!

Mucho mucho gracias everyone!!! :D:)

I used to have a pretty similar setup using the older vigor 100 plugged into wrt54g with tomato on it.

Sadly the old 100's had issues with the capacitors in the plug/transformer bit squealing.

Touch wood, the Vigor 120 will be ok. This is the first time Ive ventured into a separate modem and router over the normal combo units. This is all for the purpose of using the DD-WRT firmware Ive put on my Linksys E1000 router.

Need to set that up next (fingers crossed)!

Ah you'll be sorted then :)

Only thing I found I couldn't figure out was that once the modem is hooked up to the router you can no longer access the web interface of said modem due to it being invisible to your network and simply passing the connection through.

i.e I could never tell what I was synced at etc. I'm sure there was away round it, maybe using the second ethernet port on my mobo and the modem and something like a different subnet? Been such a long time though I've forgotten how most of it worked.

Surely there must be a way around that so you can access the modem through the router. I will do some google searching, I assumed cos the modem and router would have different ip addresses, I could access both but after reading your reply, looks as though I cant.
