Hi all, today i merged together 2 partitions i had on a 500gig disk. I merged a 420gig one with a 60 gig one. I had tried to do it the other way around (ie merge the 60 with the 420) but it doesn't seem to have done it like that.

It took ages to do, and actually gave an error. So i rebooted and now the drive appears as one partition (which is good) but it's under the name of the smaller partition, not the larger one. I was given the option of creating a folder to save all the data into from the larger partition, which i did, but when i try to access it it tells me 'access is denied'.

The thing is - the data MUST still be there. The drive is shown as being half full to capacity, and i never formatted it etc. I just can't access it.

Please help!! :( I've lost about 250gigs of stuff if i can't get this sorted.

backup my friend, backup

partition magic is renound for its problems, read a lot of bad stories on here about it!

Acronis Disk Director is a better bet..

-onto your problem

Testdisk may well be able to fit it all for you, first link on google

If you're getting access denied try taking over the ownership of the folder and subfolders under it.

I use PM and have never ever had a problem.

Also why didn't you just copy the contents of the 60gb part over to the larger, then remove and expand the larger partition? Or was the 60gb partition the main boot drive. Also did you do all of this via a PM boot disk or whilst in Windows?
