Ok here's the deal:

About a week ago some software i use started giving me errors when i tried to load it upon. It was giving me the usual "this program has crashed, do you want to send a log to microsoft". Anyway, if i ran the setup again to re-install it just cuts off mid way through the installation, and the only way i can get the software working again is to re-download it all again which is a right pain.

Then my AVG said that i had a few viruses, and i followed the steps and i got a description of the virus. It was some kind of network virus that corrupts files (only .exe files though as far as i am aware because all of my music and vids etc are fine). This made sense because my laptop and desktop had been networked a lot over this past week. :o

I formatted all two hardrives (one windows, one docs) on the desktop, and so i thought that the virus was definatly gone. However, now i am still having problems such as games giving me errors that i have never seen before. The only stuff i backed up was non-exe files like work and misc bits of info that i needed.

Now i am getting problems like explorer not loading up properly upon startup, and a few other problems that i have never had before, so i am sure that the virus is still there, as i have replaced no hardware, and re-installed hardware and software like i have always done. XP cd is also clean and working fine.

At the moment i am backing up my stuff on DVD-RW's because it looks like ill have to format everything again, unless anyone has any suggestions.

Sorry i cant remember the same of the virus, but if anyone does post the name im sure ill recognise it.

Many thanks. Nathan :)

suggestion, ditch AVG
suggestion, don't network with randoms unless you've got a 2 way firewall on

use nod32 and disable system restore, it might not be all exe's that are buggered, but if its taking too long to fix, just format

also, external drive for backup of your media is a must! (most people don't bother to backup until things have gone **** up for them once) -synctoy is a great tool for file backups
