Was just driving to work this morning and noticed an orange light on my dash, just under the oil temp gauge. Its a small orange circle and its next to the ABS light, anyone know what this means?

Cheers

Only the front pads and sensor the rear pads should see through 2 sets of front pads easily.

Inspect how far down the rears are too, you don't need to take off the wheels to do this, just check visually. They should have a fair bit left and the fronts will be low of course, the pas side sensor loom will be activated :p

Thanks for the info man. I am useless with mechanics so this will be going to the garage to be done. The car is reading another 10k miles before its next inspection so I doubt it needs a service on top.

The pads should be cheap, sensor cheap also, should be around £40 give or take for the pads and sensor with £15-£25 for fitting depending on the garage that changes them over - long as they clean the pad housing and grease it nicely all should be fine :D They may need to shave a small section of the pad so it sleeps on the disc evenly as there will likely be a groove on the outer edge of the disc from the old pads so don't be alarmed if you see some sparks while grinding heh.

I just had mine done not long ago \m/

Ok maybe i should look into buying the bits myself, you any suggestions as to where to get them from and what to get?

For the record here is the light in question......

Yep, thats brake pads. From memory you need BMW to reset the error, I replaced the pads on my old z4 myself and paid a tenner for BMW to replace the sensor/reset the error.

Get the bits from GSF, the OEM part on your car is made by Jurid. They are about 40 quid from GSF or 90 quid from BMW.

Your call, but the part itself is identical.

What car is it you have?

Given the price of OEM pads I decided to get EBC green stuff pads for a tenner or so more. They are good pads on my car with good stopping power from motorway+ speeds in the 5odd k I have driven on them so far.

Up to you of course.

Totally depends on the car, an E46 will simply need to be put in key position 2 and left for around 1 minute, the light will vanish.

Just get the pads and sensor changed at your local garage and then reset the light at home or wherever later :)

BMW don't have to reset the error at all. It's caused by a short in the wear lead. Basically a conducted lead which when it touches metal causes a short and the light comes on. It touches metal when all the friction coating from the pads has all but gone.

One wear lead per axle but as mrk said, it's likely to be the fronts. As soon as a new wear sensor is attached to new pads the light will go out.

The wear sensor simply clips into a "shoe" on the brake pad from the caliper housing.

The light won't go out immediately, it has to be reset using the above method for most models :p newer models might be different though.

I phoned BMW about this as my light did not go away and I

a faulty EBC sensor cable but the guy on the phone was like

and said just just leave it in key pos 2 for a minute and it went away and I was like
