I've got a couple of Fenders can't beat them, its been the mainstay of bassist everywhere since the 50's. You lisen to an album you can bet that the bass is on a Fender or been played on a Fender at some point.
OF course the name cost money but there are some good and not so good copies out there. SX basses are good for the cash i've only seen 1 over here ever but there big in the USA. Squire are baby Fenders reflected in the price i've got a Squire P that is 20th Annivesary edition and its as good as a Mexican P any day.
Squire quality varies try before you by is the best advice i can give, i saw that Squire had put out a very nice graphite coloured P/J today looks nice and P/J is a wicked pickup selcetion may be worth a look.
Cheap Yammaha basses IMHO sound naff and look it, however once you get to the 300-400 quid bracket they give Fender Mexico a run for the money you get more for you money!
I know its very pro Fender post but they truely are a joy of a guitar to play once you get to playing USA USA Deulex basses they are lovely, only thing wrong with them is they can have a floppy B.
