Thats the thing shoes, i really dont know!
I got to where I am by accident - I have always been a bit of a wizz with computers and a friend of mine introduced me to a very small company that he worked for. We had a couple of informal chats and they agreed to take me on for three months to sort out their IT systems (VERY small company). I spec'd and installed a load of new PCs, a SBS server, exchange system and got it all up and running nicely. After that they started showing me what the company did (I work in commercial lighting control) and I took to it like a duck to water. They took me on full time and trained me up in designing lighting control systems.
I'm still here now two and a half years on and I manage a whole department.
If you had asked me two and a half years ago if I would every work in lighting control, I'd have asked what lighting control entailed. Now I love it, I'm really glad that I got involved. My only issue now is I feel like I'm rocketing towards a reinforced glass ceiling, which is why i'm evaluating at the moment too.
My point is, you may well just fall into a position you never knew about/would have ever considered if you take on something new.
The majority of my working life has been spent working for companies turning over < £2m a year, I find them much easier to climb up in, and if it's a new company (the one I work for is in year 5 of trading now) then you can almost sculpt your role yourself, which is a nice place to be.
Have a look at local small companies, what they do and what you could offer them. The job I took on didn't exist, I talked them into renovating their IT systems.
Also worth noting is that I screwed up my A-levels and then went into the same cycle of dead end jobs for a couple of years before my old man tried to sort me out.
I appreciate that a lot of the above was lucky, as I didn't have any experience or qualifications to draw from.
Point is you never know what's round the corner - so explore all avenues and see what's on offer, both from you and from potential employers.
Good luck!
