Hi all

My son has a pc which we built together a couple of years ago, it’s a core i5 9600k with 16gb ram and he currently has a nvidia 1070 graphics card. I’m looking to get him a new card for xmas, but struggling to identify most suitable. He uses a full hd 1080p display, and isn’t particularly interested in changing this to 4k.
Ive got £500 to spend on a card, was looking at 3060 , any good ? Or any others that can be recommended within this budget?
any advice and guidance appreciated , thank you.

AMD are stronger at that price point by some a decent margin. 6750XT or 6700XT/6700 all worth a look and strong cards at 1080P.

3060 is a terrible buy unless at £250 ish. There's also now an 8GB version which is cut down and much slower than the 12GB version - avoid the 8GB at all costs.

I wouldn't bother with a 3060 in my opinion you can get far better for the same price. like the RX6700 and XT variant. Also, sometimes a RTX3070 can be found at £500.

Ideally, I'd be looking at a minimum 3060 Ti or 6700 non-XT. The RX 6600 non-XT is somewhere between a 1080 and 1080 Ti, with a 3060 12GB pretty similar in raster, so it's not a huge jump in performance. As already said, the 3060 8GB is best avoided.

A 6800 or 6800 XT are a stretch for your budget, but would be a very nice upgrade if you can get a deal.

Thanks everyone, I’ve managed to push the budget slightly and found this: msi GeForce rtx 3070 ventus 3x plus 8gb OC, assuming this is overkill but for £550 seems like a really good deal and will Future proof for him when he eventually decides on 1440 or 4K, any good?

I have the RTX3070 paired with my 9600K. I do play games at 1440 and 4K but don't expect all the whistles and bells turned on for games. Your son will love you extra this Christmas no doubt :)

Shame you should have had a look here and put an offer in could have got a 6800/6800xt. Personally from experience a 3070 8gb is not that great a buy especially for £550. Its not a 4k card too.
Never mind. My son has a 9600k and 3060ti and plays 1440p fine.
