I just bought a second hand Lenovo Y410p which has a 24GB SSD and a 1TB HDD.

I'm about to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 and I want it to run as quick as possible, so I presume that's what the SSD is for.

I know how to map program files, user files etc. across to the 1TB drive (E:) but is this likely to cause me any problems - am I better off installing Win 8.1 to the 1TB drive? If I do that then what's the point of the SSD?

Plus if anyone knows of an easy method to point program files across to the E: drive (the method I found was quite complex as it meant altering the registry), then please share it here.

Any comments or advice very much appreciated - thanks.

With an SSD that small, it's more like that it's designed to be used as a cache e.g. Intel Smart Response:

How you set it up specifically can vary from machine to machine but in my experience, you usually need to ensure the SATA mode is set to RAID, install Windows to the HDD then install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers. In the Intel RST control panel there should be some sort of option to enable acceleration which will make it use the SSD for caching purposes.

Ah ok. So could I just use it like ReadyBoost?

If not, is this something I need to setup before, during or after installing WIN 8.1?

Yeah similar idea in a sense.

I've only ever set it up on Windows 7 as above but I doubt it's much different with Windows 8. Might be worth checking for your specific machine though because as said, sometimes there are different methods. You'll want to make sure you get the SATA setting in the BIOS correct before installing Windows though, although I imagine it'll already be on the required setting anyway.

Replace it with a 120/128GB SSD

I don't really have the cash for that at the minute, but it's definitely an option for the future :)

I think it's there for Intel Virtualization Technology, but I don't really know how to set it up...!!!
