Help! - Internet speed issue - TalkTalk

Hi there, over the last 2 months our internet has become increasingly bad, we used to always get about 4 to 6 Mb/s in the day and about 3.00 to 4.00 Mb/s at night (according to speedtest.net) this was dandy until it started going down hill, it got slower and slower and now at night speedtest returns a result of around 0.30Mb/s and In the day if im lucky I will get 1.00 Mb/s.

Obviously getting to these speeds got very frustrating so I rang talktalk, and told them the issue, they said that everything was good their end and I was recieving between 4.00 and 5.00 Mb/s and my router confirmed this, so they are now getting me to do speedtests are certain times of the day.

My question to you is, is it talktalk?? or is it me or my router. Browsers and PC's are ruled out because its the same on all 3 computers and the xbox, they are also all hardwired. I have reset the router a few times, and it sped it up back to normal the first few times, but only for 5-10 minutes.

Anyone had any problems like this, its really getting annoying.

Thanks for reading :)

edit: I also dissconnect and reconnect the router via the router IP about 3 -6 times a day to get past the megavideo limit, but i wouldn't of thought that would have anything to do with it.

This is my concern. If you're constantly disconnecting / reconnecting your broadband service - your IP profile will be dropped as the line appears to be 'unstable'. Your IP profile determines the maximum speed your router can synchronise at.

Although, this is depending which broadband service you have with TalkTalk.

Another concern is your actual usage, if you're heavy user - lots of video streaming & downloading - TalkTalk will cap your line (generally) during peak hours or even off-peak hours if you're a big offender.

Although their services are advertised as unlimited (for some packages) this is not really the case - as their 'fair use policy' will come into affect as soon as you start costing them money or utilising more resources than the average user.

I think this is likely to be the issue in your case - avoid restarting your router though.

You need to extract and post the ADSL statistics from whatever modem you're using. If it's TalkTalk-supplied, it'll be a router and the stats will be inside the router's web interface somewhere.

Your IP profile determines the maximum speed your router can synchronise at.

It doesn't. Your IP profile tracks your sync rate and if the connection's unstable DLM will step in to increase the target SNR margin, reducing the sync rate and thus the IP profile. Your IP profile does not, however, control your sync rate.

Indeed, but they are still related and work in conjunction with each other. I was only trying to make it easier to understand for the topic owner, although my phrasing was probably not suitable.

Yes, we need more information before we can pinpoint the problem - if you don't know how to access your router, find your make/model and we'll be able to direct you.

hey thanks for the replies, I have contacted talktalk, so surely they would have checked my usage? I hope me disconnecting/connecting hasn't buggered anything up... Im having the same issue. Connection on my netgea dg834N says im at about 7mb. However speed tests say im gettings 0.20kbps download and roughly the same upload.

Some broadband providers are struggling with the football games.

As you can see at 3pm when England started playing, pings went crazy with everyone showing packet loss. Whilst this isn't saying exactly what is happening to speeds, I'd say it'll be correlated to speed.

I think swbroadband made a lucky call that you are not on a TalkTalk LLU package, which appears to be the case judging from your 448 kbps upstream sync and comfortable noise margin. Presumably, therefore, you are at the mercy of BTw's DLM & IP Profile system and could paste us a screen shot of your results at the Broadband Performance Tester site to help make a more complete assessment on "whos fault" this is.

I'll agree with what swbroadband and ncjok are saying about you not being on TalkTalk's LLU network - I'm miles from my exchange (57 downstream attenuation, 36 upstream) and I get well over 448kbps upstream sync, with you having such a low attenuation you should be getting over 448kbps if you were on TalkTalk LLU.

thanks for the replies, i will get that screen shot up in a few minutes, matthab how long has this been going on? and have you spoke to talk talk? been happening for a few months now so not sure its the football.

Download speedachieved during the test was - 641 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :5888 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 5000 Kbps

Looks like you're on Talktalk via DSL-Max rather than LLU. I know at the minute Talktalk are having major capacity issues with BT based lines which would explain your issues.

You can either complain and try and get some money off or free disconnection, or if your out of contract move simply move ISP.

anyone got any ideas on who to move to?

need unlimited usage (fair use above 90gb)

needs to include free weekend and evening calls

and not to far of what we already pay (£28)

think orange is the best bet, are they any good reliability wise?

Note live fairly rural postcode is B94 5LP

My brother had same issues with his TalkTalk connection, an engineer visited who told us that turning off the router regularly caused it like explained previously above and our line was perfect.

Keep the router on 24/7 after 6 days or around that your connection should return to it's best speed and stable again.(give it a week max after leaving it on always and if somehow no change then change ISP i guess.)

Not many other providers can compete with TalkTalks pricing structure, you'll be lucky if you can find another provider which can match your current price.

We certainly can't, the bandwidth alone costs more than £28 - let alone the actual connection/circuit & call packages.

End of the day, you get what you pay for with ISPs - often, if you're willing to pay just a little more than the average - you'll get a top-notch, consistent service. If you have a low budget, you have to make do with what other budget providers have to offer.

You could always try one of TalkTalks package bolt-ons to give you more allowance & traffic priority.

by not touching the router, do you mean not changing the IP address's too?

thanks for your reply

Your actual IP Profile is fine in this case, so you don't need to worry about this - although constantly disconnecting and reconnecting your router can/will cause your IP profile to drop (resulting in slower speed) if you do it regularly.

You seem to be lucky in this case.

I have exactly the same problem as OP.

In fact I am so utterly fed up with talktalk I plan to leave and use Virgin Media.

Talktalk are rubbish.

Make sure your getting Virgin's cable (10Mbit/20Mbit/50Mbit) package rather than VM ADSL as you will have even more problems with this than you do currently with TalkTalk

*Speaking from experience*
