I have a Sony Vaio VPCEB4X0E which shuts iself down when I start it up. Sometimes it will shut down after a few seconds, other times it shuts down after booting into Windows.

It started happening after I cleaned the heatsink and fan. The laptop DOES NOT get hot but still shuts down?

I've tried removing the extra RAM that I put into it. Also tried running it without the battery and with just the power adaptor connected to it.

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks

yea replace the thermal paste you can get cheap tube for few pounds if you have removed the heatsink this could very well be your problem and make sure the paste you get is artic silver witch is good quality paste

You may not be seeing the true temps before it shuts down, as if the cpu is not being cooled properly (due to the paste), the temps will suddenly spike under load.

A CPU/GPU can reach 100c+ in a matter of seconds without contact with a heatsink. The thermal paste fills the void between the two allowing the heat energy to pass away from the chip.

Thanks for all your replies.

I've ordered some thermal paste and a small bottle of 99% alcohol which I believe is needed to remove the old paste first.

Will let you know how it goes once I've applied it.

99% alcohol? Never heard of it.

What you want is IPA - Isopropyl Alcohol, and some cotton buds. Both available from your nearest pharmacy or electronics place!

OK, so I removed the heatsink completely and one end is still "glued" to the CPU and the other end has come off what I'm presuming is the GPU. So it looks like part of the heatsink is either soldered onto the CPU or attached with thermal paste so I can't and haven't done anything with this part.

I managed to apply thermal paste to the other part which attaches to the GPU and re-assembled the laptop.

Now the power light on the power button just comes on and goes off every few seconds and the laptop will not boot or make any sound. Any suggestions please?
