Hey guys, I recently built a new computer with a core duo E6400 and ASRock Conroe xfire esataII and I want to get into overclocking but I heard rumours
of my mobo having a lock on the FSB not reaching more than 300? That would mean my cpu would only overclock to 2.4 where I was hoping for maybe 3.0ghz ? Did anyone use this board before/have any info?/anyone know of an update? TBH I know very little on this subject but you gotta start somewhere eh?
I currently have stock cooler and crap PSU but upgrading to Seasonic 600W PSU and a scythe cooler.
Thanks in advance and any help appreciated- James

EDIT: I emailed ASRock and i'l copy and paste their reply but to me it looks like they completely avoided the question!

Dear Sir,
We are sorry the overclocking ability is different with different hardware configurations.
We are not able to promise this.
Thanks for your understanding.
Yours truly,
ASRock

I'm not sure about your particular board. My Asrock board won't go above 300 and that's with DDR and AGP, when used with DDR2 and PCI-E my board won't go above 285. This is due to the Via chipset. The only reason I bought this board was as an easy upgrade route.

EDIT: Just had a look at your board here .
The 945P doesn't clock very well so I'm afraid you'll need a better motherboard if you want any serious overclocking potential. Also it doesn't look like mATX??

EDIT2: Lol @ Tute ;)

Bad choice of mobo there for overclocking. 3Ghz is just too ambitious for the board. Will you be able to upgrade the mobo as well? What is your current spec?

Asrock is correct in saying that the ability to overclock is not one of the features offered with this mobo so they can't guarantee successful oc.

On having a look at this board, what exactly does this offer? I assume it must be quite cheap..

Does anyone know of an update that would perhaps remove this wall?

I have no intention of returning the board because it cost me €130 and beyond return date. Just thought there might be a way around it.

Current spec:
Core Duo E6400
The mobo currently on trial
stock cooler
crap 480W psu
Was planning on new PSU and cooler...

Any ideas people?

If you had asked you would have got a clear answer - excellent motherboard with every feature you could possibly want, but it's not for the overclockers.

You will get 2.7GHz stable out of it though, which is E6700 speeds.

I would be very happy with 2.7 but how if FSB is locked at 300 and multiplier is at 8 so... assuming (please remember I'm just a beginner) 8 x 300 = 2.4ghz, would that be right?

Sorry - for some reason I thought you had an E6600. No, then 2.4GHz is all you'll get. The FSB isn't locked at 300, it goes up to something daft like 400, but there is no PCIe lock so it just won't boot at about 25FSB over stock.

A new PSU or cooler wouldn't help your overclock. You won't ever get more then 300FSB on that board.

A good board for your setup would be the DS3P.

It depends more on your RAM. Supposing that your RAM can run 400mhz at 1:1 with the FSB then you're looking at 3.2Ghz. I think that should be a reasonable goal for your system.

That's a common misconception, but the problem isn't lack of FSB headroom (it goes up to about 450 on the later BIOS I think). The problem is therte is no PCIe lock. You get 25FSB increase then the lack of a PCIe lock kicks in and it falls over.

Okay lads thanks for all the help, I feel pretty much that the conclusion is get
another board!
So if I may ask for help again...
I only use one website for computer parts as it accepts the type of card I have,
but any chance you could pick out a decent overclocking motherboard for me?

Greatly appreciated lads.

My specs for compatibility reasons..
PciE 7300GT graphics card
core duo E6400
DDR2 667mhz Kingston Ram

hmm no competitors' names or links please.

How much do you want to spend? 965P-DS3 is the all the favourite for £82, or an extra £6 for the DS3P. The P5B series is also great for overclocking as well.

There was a 965P-S3 in the B-grade section for £47 last time I saw, not sure if it is still there though.
