TL;dr - Should I pester OcUK about switching from AIO to air cooler, and whether or not they're listed the wrong PSU?

The long version:-

I've finally placed an order with OcUK for a new system. I haven't owned a decent PC for close on 2 decades, it's a significant investment for me, and I'm really excited about it.

First I ordered a build based on the z170 Midi Tower configuration, but then I changed that to the Neuron because it seemed to offer a better GPU (the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming instead of the KFA2 Reference Blower I'd specified originally. It also has matching GPU and MB manufacturer (both Gigabyte, instead of Asus MB and KFA2 GPU) and better brand memory (Corsair rather than the Team Dark stuff I'd selected).

It also came with the OcUK AIO cooler which I thought would be better than the Sapphire Vapoour X I'd specied (purely on the basis of cost).

I'm now thinking the Sapphire might be a better newbie option since I don't intend to overclock much, if at all, and so I think my system will be quieter in generally with an air-cooler.

Also, the Neuron includes a 700W Gold-rated Gigabyte PSU, which I felt was an acceptable replacement for the 650W platinum rated Super Flower PSU I'd spec'ed originally.

Subsequently, I can't find such a model and am a bit concerned it's actually a miss-described bronze rated model in fact.

When I changed to the Neuron, I was told they couldn't stray from the configurator at all, and as I've already messed them around with this order, I was hoping for some views here first before deciding whether to bother them again.

So, thanks a lot for any help you can offer this clueless layman!

Sorry mate, struggling to get a grasp on what you are doing?

I assume you are going the pre-built route? If so what is your budget?

If you've ordered it already - that's it surely?

I ordered it on Friday and there's a build time of a week, so I might be able to change it.

Just hoping for more info on PSUs and on whether I'd be better off with a £30 fan cooler, as opposed to a £65 AIO cooler.

Thanks again.

Well as you point out, looking at the Gigabyte website I can only see a 700 Watt bronze PSU which I wouldn't be happy with at all. Looks like they do a 750 Watt gold. I've no experience with Gigabyte PSU but wouldn't choose one based on what I've seen on their website.

I'd keep the AIO, they're maintenance free and quite quiet if you get a good one.

Thanks for that. It's just the reply I was after really - that it's fair enough to query the psu and that if they can't change the cooler then it's not a big deal.

Why not call and get them to clarify the rating on the PSU?

Echoing the above about the AIO. The OcUK one is rated pretty good.

Good job on securing the 1070 over the 1060.

Hmm. Got a reply to my webnote. The system comes overclocked so the AIO makes sense.

The PSU issue is less satisfactory. As I've said, the product page states "rated Gold" but the reply I got says:

"I cannot tell you the efficiency of the PSU as I dont know, it is a PSU that Gigabyte have provided to us so we can run an offer for the system, sorry about that, but we would not use a PSU that it is not suitable for the high-end hardware that is chosen in the system."

Not sure what to make of that, to be honest.

i can't imagine OcUK would use a psu they didn't rate or trust in a prebuilt system irrespective of gigabyte supplying it to them to help with the cost. if it went pear shapedthey would be liable so I'd be happy to trust their judgement on that.

Yeah, I guess. One of the reasons I bought from OcUK was because of their excellent reputation (the main reason though, was all the help I've got on these forums!).

It just seems a bit odd that they're confident enough to state Gold in the marketing, but at the first query, that becomes "we don't know". That definitely undermines my faith.

After a bit more digging I'm certain that it's wrongly described and it is the B700H bronze rated model.

In case anyone else is researching the matter...

Here's a post about bundle deals where Gigabyte give away the better G750H with their cheaper Founder's Edition card, and the B700H with the G1 version that comes in the OcUK Neuron build:-

And here's the most in-depth review I can find of both PSUs:-

Still can't find out who the OEM is.

More data on the B700H here:-

EDIT: Oh, and of course there was a slightly bigger clue that the machine might come with the B700H...
