I built my current PC in the middle of 2012 and I am quite interested in the current Oculus Rift offer. What would I need to update in my current setup in order to play VR to a decent standard.

Current Spec

Processor: Intel i5 3570K (Ivy Bridge??) (standard settings not overclocked)
CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 13
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H
Memory: Corsair LP Vengence Blue 2 X 4GB DDR

Samsung 120gb SSD for OS (Running Windows 10)
Samsung 250gb SSD (Mainly for Games)
Seagate Barracuda 5900RPM 2TB Secondary HD

750W Modular PSU

Many Thanks

You're going to need to overclock your CPU and get yourself a decent GPU, at least an RX580 or GTX 1060, ideally something more powerful.
You should also strongly consider 2X8GB of high speed DDR3, which is a rip off right now but, hey, you kinda need it. The prices on DDR3 start to get silly after 2400 or 2666Mhz so don't go much higher than that. 2400 C11 is fine, really.

Also, yes, high speed DDR3 is outside of spec for the IMC on that chip. Intel suggests not exceeding 1.5V DDR3, but a lot of people have run 1.65V DDR3 on Sandy/Ivy for like 6 years with no issues. I'm running 1.65V RAM on Haswell right now and I was doing it on Sandy too and no issues. My friend's machine that I built in 2011 (2500K) with a 1.65V RAM is still chugging.

These are the recommended minimum specs for Oculus/HTC Vive:
  • Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 or better
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 4590 or greater
  • RAM: 8GB or more
So in addition to a new GPU and RAM, ideally you need a better CPU, but that also means a new motherboard and RAM. RAM you have to buy anyways, so consider if you want to buy a new CPU/motherboard too. If you really want a good setup, get a 1080GTX (or AMD equivalent), new CPU, new motherboard, new RAM.

So really i need to buy a new computer! :)

No, get the gpu first, see how it is, then if you need to upgrade more, then do. could save you a lot of cash!

Just dont buy ddr3 if you think you might upgrade the cpu soon, as you will of course have to get new ram, on the plus side second hand ddr3 is strong price wise

Thanks James, I think that is the way I will go and upgrade anything over time.

Have you tried on a headset?
I ask as I bought a rift a few weeks ago without trying(no where near had a demo)
It lasted a weekend and I had to return it :(
I was experiencing major motion sickness even on static images and demos
I am still gutted as I was REALLY looking forward to playing with this new tech:(

I have used a friends PSVR and more recently his Rift, in the short time I used it I did not experience any motion sickness during use but he said he initially did with the PSVR but after using regularly for a couple of weeks he did not experience it any more. I think you should have given it more than a weekend but obliviously I dont know how bad you were feeling

I was feeling pretty bad and decided to return asap under the DSR rule
I probably `should` have tried for longer but I did not want to affect my right to return
As I said I am gutted but I was `unwell` for a few days after(not joking! )Soooo jealous of all you guys still :)
Maybe cos I am an oldie?over 53?
Will/might try the second Gen units in a few years
or look for a cheap Rift in a year or so and try again
