Received my my xxl mousemat today and having set it up (at least I could manage that!!) , I found that my coolermaster storm mouse did not run as well as I hoped.

Decided to have a play and having found and run the program software , noticed an 'update' firmware button (the legend alongside said that if I pressed the automatic update button it would check etc) - not an automatic update button , just a firmware update button.
Pressed it and it took me to programs in c drive and I looked for the storm folder; found it , found the firmware part which was dated last year when Ibuilt the computer - thought that although I had no real idea what was going on it could do no harm to click on the existing firmware program - it began to update/load it . Got part way in when it stopped announced that the update had failed (error 21 - I think- I did not take that much notice!)
Mouse appeared to have frozen so re-booted to find that although the mouse lit up it did not work.
Tried different usb port - still did not work.
Tried my old rocatt mouse - did not work.
Tried to add device - windows could not find the mouse
Tried un-installing storm software - no joy
Tried re-install of storm software - it advised that it could not find the device.

Summary - my computer cannot , it appears , see any mouse!!

Any idea what I have done ? and what the solution is?

BTW I find controlling things through the keyboard very difficult - any idiots guide available?
and did hope that if I've buggered windows mouse driver config base that I could do the old style windows xp disc repair install but having read up a bit am not sure if still possible ( I have never created and do not know what an Iso file is:o etc) - cannot I not put windows disc in drive , adjust bios to boot from disc and then select repair install or whatever it is called.

Realize that I've just put in hand a real senior moment - do consider myself a fight birk ! - Sympathy and assistance appreciated :)

Am running windows 64 bit Ultimate. on an Asus z77 motherboard.

Help very much appreciated. :D

Quick update.

Thought I would try the mouse in my sons computer (running windows 7 64bit).

It found the Hid device, loaded (drivers) , advised all installed and asked to be re-booted. Did , as asked.

Mouse still not working - although as before lights are on etc.

I can only assume that the failed firmware update did break the mouse.:(

But having switched off - taken the storm out and replaced it with the roccat - the latter works fine - not in my computer , my sons.

Help still very much appreciated. (should have said windows 7 ultimate for my comp.)

I had a firmware flash on my Logitech G5 broke it. Sent the lights dotty and just generally rubbished it. Logitech asked me to send the end of the plug in and shipped me a new one. Might be worth contacting the manufacturers.

Would seem the logical step, their update or utility caused the problem, let them sort it.
Do you have another mouse to use in the meantime?

I didn't know it was possible to brick a mouse, but that's what you've done!

With corrupted firmware in the mouse, the computer's got no way of talking to it. You're only hope is that coolermaster are nice about it. Hopefully there's nothing in the small print about firmware updates being at your own risk.

I do understand that the coolermaster mouse has gone .... BUT why will the Roccatt Kone mouse not install/work?

? - it's a long time since I installed the roccat -is it one of those that you need to install the software before windows can see it?

Have not got the roccat software to hand but will look it out and give it a go, tomorrow.

My memory is telling me that although the bells and whistles might not work windows will see any usb mouse when installed and load its own drivers ; pending you installing the manufacturers own. Am I wrong?

Assuming that I find that the kone etc will not work - re-install of windows etc should remedy matters ? (there is no way I can somehow have knacked the board is there?)

Just having a bit of a panic here !

Are other peripherals working such as the keyboard
Yes - just the mouse

Have remembered that under Devices and Printers there was still an entry for a Hid mouse - even tho it was not working. - Strange ; might try uninstalling - if I can - when I'm next on it.

This.

Can you not run the firmware update again?

Have uninstalled the software but could install and try - just can see me having problems trying to get it to run just using a keyboard.

Can anyway provide me with a link to a site providing an idiots guide to using a keyboard as a mouse?

Make the keyboard emulate mouse. Go to Start > Control Panel > Ease of Access to activate it. If this does not work then you need to do a windows reinstall as it would seem anything to do with "pointer control" is broken.
