Hello chaps, I pay for the Internet in my house and there are up to 5 girls with laptops sharing it. Needless to say they are clueless about security and the copyright MAFIAA so I need to take steps to protect myself.

- I need to know how to 100% block limewire and other filesharing apps
- I need to be able to identify who is using how much bandwidth and limit them
- I need a means of identifying any pwned computers in my network and automagically blacklist them from the router until they are cleaned

I've got a Netgear DG834G modem/router. Any help? :)

Your router doesn't support traffic shaping.
Torrent clients adjust their port usage to respond to being blocked.

Having been through this stuff before, my advice is to cut them off.

Get a friend to mail you a fake cour summons letter to repay the cost of a couple of high profile bands/films they downloaded, that'll scare them perhaps into stopping?

Please dont use words like Nazi in posts / thread titles it may cause offence in our family forum.

Your router does not support traffic shaping. The other way is SNMP but your router does not support that either.

The next way is to use a UTM that support SNMP but this maybe a bit advanced.

In terms of looking for computers with issues (i.e. viruses) this is 100% not possible without the use of a server which uses rule based threat management that blocks compyters, how ever this would need you to remotly install it and configure it.

Your trying to do business things on a home router which is simply not possible. So in short get a server and then you can do all the above, otherwise i suggest you have a stern word with them.

Hmm after a bit of googling I found a hidden SNMP option on my router, but after enabling it I couldn't connect to the router at all.

I have a couple of Ubuntu boxes that I can repurpose, how easy would it be to set one up in between the modem and LAN for traffic monitoring?

Thanks for the replies chaps. :)

If you're using either the wireless or the switch ports on the router you're going to have issues forcing them to use your box. Otherwise you can just turn it into a modem and stick the box between it and a switch/wireless AP.

Something like a Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato or some variant would do much the same job and draw a fraction of the power though.

+1. Even better is to fake a Davenport Lyons letter asking for x amount of money and tell em to pay up out of their own money.
