Help me before i lose my mind!!

Hi, please, please, please can someone help me and suggest a solution to my problem, as i'm starting to lose my mind!!! [:'(]
All i would like to do, is watch and record freeview or freesat tv, plus watch my DVD collection which is stored on my external hard drive as TS files!
Ideally it would be one unit, but i don't think there is anything out there that can do both - please prove me wrong
I have though about, Western digital and PVR setup, apple tv and pvr setup, and i'm don't know what is best, so any suggestions or options would be greatly received and would stop a simple man loosing his already small brain!!

am happy to do that nintenjo, if that would be easier / cheaper?
The only probelms is, i'm a bit of a newbie, so will this be out of my league

Does anyone have any comments on the Apple TV media player - i've heard some good reports, but you guys probably know more about it?
