Help me block an IP address.

So, my room mate isn't paying for his share of the internet, and this has been going on for some time now. I've just turned a blind eye to it because he's usually good for paying his share of everything else.

He uses a MacBook Pro for whatever on the internet, I don't care to find out but it just saps the bandwidth. And I live in a rural area still using overhead copper wires so no such thing as Fibre Optic around here.

So onto the main question and topic. Can anyone walk me through blocking an IP address? Or point me to some software that can block IP addresses.

My internet provider is BT and I have a BT Home Hub 4.

I should also mention I've looked into MAC Filtering but the Home Hub 4 doesn't have the option to as far as I can tell.

Should be able to do it under Access Control within the router settings.

I've experimented with Access Control before. I should have mentioned in the first place I would prefer to be subtle about blocking his IP.

Access Control just slaps a giant 'BT ACCESS CONTROL' logo on your screen.

How is he connecting? if it is wirelessly just change the wifi password on the router and the access password to the router (although this could be overcome by a factory reset - as would any specific block that you would add via the router setup)

Why though? He's not paying his fair share then he gets no access. If you do it subtle then he will start rebooting the router, resetting the config etc etc.

Do it so its in his face and he knows, he'll probably cough up the share of money.

MAC Address filtering is about the best* solution for blocking their device as IP blocking is easily bypassed.

* You can still bypass MAC filtering but it's obviously a lot harder.

Just change the password, as others have said he will just think the router is faulty and will keep resetting it etc.

And all the resetting will constantly boot me off it as well, that's the issue.

Surely no matter how you block him, he'll attempt to reset the router multiple times anyway?

Perhaps try to move the router to a lcoked him he can't have access to, and change the wifi password, then tell him that he will not have the new password until he agrees to pay his share of the internet.

Or reserve their IP address in dhcp and set up a firewall rule disallowing that IP any connections. Alternatively just talk the them.

QOS, gradually slow him down? If you change the password he could just re-set the router or login using admin and the serial number of the router (this is the case for most routers/aps) and alter the password and get back on. It's probably quite tricky to kick anyone off the wifi who can physically get to the router.

A static address would overrule the DHCP reservation would it not? :confused:

Ah yes it would, I depends on how savvi the person is I guess. There are ways around most things here even swapping of the password because a reset would lose the new password.

Thinking about it I don't know why I suggested what I did

So when he can't access and he comes and asks you to help, what will you say then? Surely that will be more awkward, as it will look passive aggressive, you'll have to say you blocked it because he isn't paying. Surely just saying, cough up mate, will be a better solution?
