help me budget myself!

Looking at some of these outgoings, i need a better job if im EVER to move out.

I'd only last 6 months ;o

Im a graduate with a degree classification equal to the industry standard, but dont have the confidence to give a graduate scheme a go. Basher, give me your job.

Believe me, you don't want my job at the moment :)

Living with the mrs in Stoke and our outgoings are:

Mortgage: £470
Council Tax: £109
Tv, Phone, Broadband: £40
Petrol: £150
Car: £150
Food: £200
House Insurance: £10
Life Insurance: £10
Mobile: £15
Tv License: £15

Then I put away (I like to put more away than I need):
Gas + Electricity: £70
Car Insurance: £50
Car Tax: £20
Water: £30

Total: £1339

I can't access the exact figures while at work but that's a pretty close estimate and doesn't include things like nights out, meals, birthdays, christmas etc.

Couple of suggestions if you're struggling, try shopping at Aldi for things like bread, cereal and things like that instead of doing one bulk shop at tesco or morrisons or where ever! It's much much cheaper and to be honest I haven't noticed the difference between the food from Aldi and the food from Tesco or Morrisons.

Also make sure you put money away each month for an unexpected bill, doing this really saved me the agro of having to worry when my old car broke down!

Ideally wait a few months for your girlfriend to try and find a job. With an income of £1256 a month and rent ~£500 money will be constantly tight otherwise. Even if she got something part-time it would make things that much easier.

It's been 20 years since i did what you're doing now but i made the same mistake of only having my low income for the two of us and the first year or two were hard. In hindsight i'd have pushed the missus to get a job earlier or put it off for a year until i had built up a savings cushion as there was just no need to struggle like we initially did, it was too much enthusiasm/impatience.
