Hi there,

I purchased a X-FI Extreme music for my PC a few days ago and haven't been as impressed as i thought i was going to be, i think this could be due to my speakers. I am very impressed with the EAX in games through headphones (Technics F290) and also music sounds pretty good through the headphones but through my speakers it just isn't that great. Everything just seems lifeless if you get what i mean.

I have a decent hifi right next to my PC with the speakers on brackets on the wall so i wont be needing a sound system thats dedicated to music, mainly it'll be used for games and films. 5.1 is a must as i really like the surround sound in games. Would i be better off getting a PC sound system like Logitec xZ-5500 or could i buy a surround sound setup designed for home theater and use that?, as Ive heard that PC sound systems are overpriced and don't sound as good. Anyone have some suggestions as to what i should get?, my budget is £200 max.

Here is the sound system I'm using now, its loud but just doesn't sound very good.

By the looks of things you'll only be able to get pro logic sound, basically an upmixed stereo signal. Reasonable for movies, but not great for music and games.
I use my PC mainly for games then movies and lastly music so if i understand your post correctly it wouldn't really suit my needs. If i have misunderstood you I'm sorry, i appreciate any help and I'm not trying to be awkward or anything. Ill try hooking my PC up then and see what it sounds like, it cant hurt, i have an RCA-3.5 somewhere that i used to connect my old hifi to my PC. When i connected my old hifi it sounded really rubbish no matter what setting i used on the hifi i had to keep turning it right up to hear the high sounds and vocal sounds in games but this was probably because it was a cheap hifi and was more geared for Bass.

Right ive hooked my hifi up to my pc and am playing a few music tracks and it sounds pretty good, better than the pc speakers i have :) . Ill try a game in a minuite and see what that sounds like, the X-FI has a game mode so ill use that.

Basically, nothing is black and white. What I meant really was that you should try connecting it to your hi-fi before spashing out on new speakers. Which I see you have done! See how it sounds for games and then make your mind up.

If your happy with it hooked up too your hi fi speakers well and good.

Otherwise a set of Logitech Z-680 THX® Certified 5.1 450 Watts Speakers - Retail (SP-006-LG) would be worth a look at. I've had a set for almost 3 years and am VERY pleased with them, an excellent set of speakers. ;)

The Logiteh 5500 would be a good setup to go for i have them and im well impressed playing games like Oblivian - awesome! have a look around you can get them for £180 delivered :)
