Help me choose a new ISP

I've currently got 100mb virgin fibre. I'd like to change from them for various reasons. I realise I won't get the same speed as nobody else offers a full fibre connection. Certainly not for <£40/month.
I do not require a landline or TV package.

At home everything connects via WiFi. There are no wired connections. I have at least 10 devices connected to the WiFi. I'm also building a new pc and would like to start gaming.

I'm looking for a reliable service, and so far Plusnet and Zen have been recommended.
The only caveat with Plusnet being the router may not be great. I have a spare Asus RT-N66U lying around if that's of any benefit?
How do Plusnet and Zen routers compare to the virgin homehub 3?

Feel free to throw in any other advice.

Thanks!

VM is not full fibre, at least not in all properties. For the most part it's fibre to the cabinet and then coax to the premises.

I've been with PlusNet for 3, maybe 4 years now and I don't have any complaints.

What speeds are you being offered by Zen? There's no point playing the "what ISP" game if all the alternatives to Virgin are sub-15Mbps.

I find Sky to be decent - get 80mb down and 20 up.

Doesn't appear to fall over very often, and the WiFi is good on the newer version of the SkyHub.

I've not noticed much if any of a hit on performance at peak times when streaming and stuff (always found this an issue with Virgin).

Zen's offering a typical download speed of 45-72mb.
Plusnet says 66mb average.
Sky is offering 46-66mb.

You'll get whatever that predicts, it's more accurate if you have a phone number or if the address has had VDSL before.

One provider can't magically give you more than another. Looking at what the 3 examples you put I'd wager it'll settle around 60-65 Mbps or so.

Zen give you a fixed IP address if that’s of any interest. But I believe Vodafone will as well if you ask for one.

Is there any benefit in paying extra for Zen over Plusnet?

Zen might not cancel your (many years old) account at someone else’s request so that the sneaky telesales rat taking the call gets their commission for a new sign up, then flatly refuse to reinstate the account, leaving all the configuration to be sorted with no remote access and even trying to tell me that the email address john@[my-long-held-domain].co.uk is not actually a valid email address.

I used PN for many years and regularly highly recommended them to others, but if I were still in the UK, I’d rather go back to using dial up rather than ever touch that shower again.

I’m not sure why they would do this anyway.

I've been with Sky, BT and Plusnet, have family with TalkTalk, Sky, BT and all sorts, I've never found any to be better or worse than the other. End of the day your connection is only as good as the hardware in place which isn't going to change between providers.

I agree

Its when you have problems then you see what type of service they provide
