Hi, I'm a networking novice and I don't know what all the nomenclature associated with routers means.

Do I want gigabit switches? Don't know.

Do I want 300 mbps? Err, yeah...I guess.

Can I please receive some reccomendations and also a ballpark figure of how much I need to spend.

I currently have a bt homehub version 2 (black wave shape) but its not very good, connection drops out, I can feel lag when gaming online and the wireless range isn't great.

My main areas I want to improve are the connection dropping out and the lag, the wireless range isn't as important.

The router is connected to my pc using ethernet and the router is connected directly to the telephone line. Sorry if that doesn't need saying but I haven't got much of a clue.

The devices that connect wirelessly are a playstation 3 and a ipad.

Can I please receive some reccomendations on a router and how much will I need to spend do you think to get something thats got a similar or better feature set to the home hub but is also substantially better at the key areas I mentioned?

Thanks.

I got a TP-link n600 a few weeks back to replace the home hub. Flashed it with DD-WRT and never looked back. Hardware wise it may not compare to some routers but depending on your internet speed this may be of little concern. I'm on Infinity 2 and it doesn't strain with pushing 60Mbps down / 19Mbps up through it. I doubt I'll need to change it any time soon. I've had it 2 weeks+ now and it's given me no problems.
